Full Version: I'm misty eyed...

OK. I went out the other day (on the bike, tossers!) and it was cold... I had to ride with my helmet slightly open or my glasses and / or visor misted up.

WTF is wrong? I've a foggy mask (that I wear of an evening as well laughcont.gif ) and it ain't that cheap a helmet (£170 ish) but I cannot get this sorted.

Ruins the ride for me sometimes (as it did on Sunday). Suggestions or help appreciated...

Great Idea... I'll stop breathing while I ride sniffle.gif

misting is a pain in the arris.  Ive tried everything and have never managed to stop it happening.

I had a cover on the bottom of my helmet, which was suppose to cover my chin and keep it warm. It was vented but even so, it still caused misting. I eventually removed it and it made a hell of a difference.

Those fog city things are supposed to be good but you can't get them for your glasses, apparently.  blush21.gif

Could try a fog-city visor insert - it's a thin plastic film that is stuck on the inside. Night vision is slightly negatively affected though...

Seems to me you need to stop your warm, moisture-laden breath getting to the visor. Only way to do that is to prevent it physically (which the mask is supposed to do), and failing that - ventilation.

The colder it is (and it doesn't get much colder than it is right now), or the more moisture in the air (when it rains at warmer times if the year), the worse the problem - hence you have to augment the vents on the helmet by opening the visor slightly.

If I have all my vents open  :O , I don't mist-up, but it does get chilly rolleyes.gif

I dont steam up too badly - I have a balaclava stylee hood/neckwarmer which stops yer breath hitting the visor so much, and also stops me hair getting in the way or getting stuck in my jacket zip

My problem is sneezing ... at some point in the mornin, I always sneeze!  Then I steam up    :sniffle:

TC, I'll have to have a hunt around for that then! Sounds just 'bout what I need... grin.gif

I use it in conjunction with a fog city

And what, pray, is a fog city? Is that like the "foggy mask" thing I've got?

Blandy's a tosser blush21.gif I read the post about fog city... and then forgot about it rolleyes.gif I'm gonna go investigate that at the weekend I think - thanks Hilts etc.

Yeah, even with all the vents (well, all two of them then...) open I'm still misting over... another small problem with the foggy is this...

When it's really cold your breath has loads of dribbly bits in it (not to mention snot... from the dribbly nose caused by having to ride with the bloody visor open Oo1.gif ) and after a while it becomes... well, wet. Have you tried to breathe through a web flanel... have a go it's mighty entertaining... bit like having a piece of bubble gum over your gob and nose. Which is nice rolleyes.gif

I meant wet flanel... Oi Dave, this beard's acting up again veryangry.gif

BW-I ride with my visor open to the first "notch" when it all goes misty.
My "instructors" lid is REALLY bad for that & being flip front is difficult to use a face mask.
the Fog City works well on my AGV.
The spray on type gizmos you can buy are not that good IMHO-A small drop of Fairy liquid-applied to the INSIDE of the visor with a finger, then buffed with a soft cloth works as well.

Me being a tight twonk, I use good old fashioned good quality washing up liquid, one pinhead sized spot on each lens then a good polish with either bog roll or kitchen roll. its the glyserine and carbolic acid when dry that do the trick. Don't use scented washing up liquid or you will find the vapour gets in your eyes and it looks like the wife has smacked you in the eyes. sniffle.gif
BikerGran
I've tried lots of the special anti-fog treatments and never found anything better than washing up liquid - a good quality one does seem to work better than a cheap one.

Mt glasses don't steam up as long as my scarf is only over my mouth not my nose.  If it's over the nose your hot breath goes straight up into the glasses.  I still usually ride with the visor open a tiny bit, that's just my preference - always have car window down a bit too, even if it's cold/raining.
When its VERY cold and the visor is closed, always push it up a little when approaching a junction or RAB or slowing down cos the change in temp when you slow down makes it steam up.

Yeah, that's what I'm having to do... but I don't want to 'cos me nose gets cold... and last time out it brought tears to my eyes (as well as a lump to the throat when I realised I couldn't actually see the bends in the road blush21.gif )

I'll have a go with the washing up liquid... not come across that before where do you get that from then laughcont.gif

BG, interesting point about the scarf not being over your nose as that's exactly how the foggy mask sits... with a little gap so's the warm breath can go straight onto the glassess... even tried putting the glasses on the end of my nose (some 4" away rolleyes.gif ) but found I was looking "at the glasses" all the time rather than through them.

Think I'll stick to the cage 'till it warms up some... at least that's got heated windscreen (one of the things the vandalising tossers didn't break)...

You know I didn;t read through all the posts on this thread... so it's very possible that someone may have said the same already...

I've got a visor insert (double glazing effectively) which sticks on the inside of your visor with a layer of double sided foam padding which very effectively stops the visor fogging.. it is also light sensitive and more or less has the same effect as a tinted visor on the odd occasions when it is sunny.

I use Bob Heath Visor anti fog on my specs.

Overall result is fog free motorcycling (except on misty mornings when the fog builds up on the outside of the visor... but this is easily enough wiped away....)

(nice side effect of the Bob Heath stuff is that when you walk into a pub on a cold night your specs don;t instant;y fog up and cause you to fall over... if you fall over it's down to too much beer smile1.gif )
