Seen as im on the road with my proper bike now ive decided its time for a new helmet for a few reasons. Firstly the visor is now poorly fitting, (managed to break the mechanism) and its been down the road with me once.

Current helmet I paid £100 for 14 months ago, it?s a nitro (shock horror) 700V and I really like the graphics and little stylised vents on it. Now its retailing at about £45 which is putting me off replacing it with the exact same.

Want to spend around £100 to £150 ish again but im a bit stuck as to where to start, want something quite graphical in either silver/black/white or fluorescent orange/redishy that doesn?t look too much like a fishbowl or like you?re a storm trooper lbhh.gif

The other thing ive been wondering is which brands offer the most features for the price, see I would have thought a £160 pound helmet from a manufacturer like nitro would have to rele be something special to warrant them charging that much for it; whereas a 'more prestige' manufacturer would be able to charge extra just because it bares their brand name. I see this a lot with other products? is it true for helmets?

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated grin.gif

My opinion is that you pay for what you get with helmets. A top end helmet (£180-£300+) will give you more options as to removable linings, replacement padding, different visor options and build materials and quality. The more you pay usually the lighter it is due to what it,s made out of, but you are usually paying a little more due to the name. If it is a race replica (Bayliss, Biaggi, Rossi etc) then you will pay more again.

If you are not fussed about graphics go for a top end helmet with a plain colour scheme.

Pay as much as you can afford, after all you,ve only got one head.

I Hate to argue (doesn't sound like me does it? lbhh.gif ) But just because you can spend £300+ on a lid- doesn't mean you NEED to.
I'm wearing a cheap £50 job- apart from the tacky stickers (which have mostly been removed) it does the job. But the more pricy ones DO look better :coo:

There's a decent artical on the front page by TC (I think) discussing the bits and bobs regarding smack-hats.

To sum it up in less than 25 words...
A secure fit is better than fancy options and a £50 helmet that fits correctly will offer much more protection than ill fitting £400 helmets.

OK- so thats exactly 25 words but you get the idea.

Here's the link to TC's artical http://www.ukbikeforum.com/html/helmet.shtml

Sorry, I should have mentioned that this is after fitting, kind of in an ideal world where fitting isn't an issue. Sounds strange and im not planning on buying an ill fitting helmet, its just im wondering more about the brands atm then anything smile1.gif

I would think that the fact that it's discounted is more to do with fashion than anything else - it's prolly last years pattern don't let the price stop you, I reckon it's still the same helmet

it's at times like these that ya really miss MotorCycleCity
big bike shops with lots of lids and gear are worth wandering round and just trying stuff on, so you know which suits you best and you can see the difference in quality of linings, vents etc
Anyways - I like Arai and they have a very good name, also Roof which I mostly wear, Shoei don't suit my head but also well thought of, my mate swears by Uvex and finds them very light, but not in my size.

I'm hoping the makers start advertising the weight of the lid, so I can choose on that and give my pooor owd neck a rest.

Im not too sure if Im breaking any rules but this company has lots to offer in
almost everything:

Today I bought a 'Caberg' helmet and Im well pleased with it, costs normally £150
at the shop I went but got it nocked down to £129 cos I bought a bike there.

On the above site theres lots too check out but here's the link to their helmets

The one I got is the 'Caberg Justissimo' but I need to add the pictures doesnt do it
justice, my one is a nice cool silver but not to silvery.
Excellent features include total flip up front, can be converted to open face if like
has a secondary built in sun visor and I was surprised at how perfect a shade it
was, the plus point is the flip up the chin section I think its real neat.

Happy hunting

Cheers
