Why? Fashion? Doesn't exist on a motorcycle. If the parts you have are doing the job - fine. If they are worn out - replace them. Don't mess with the essentials unless you really, really, really, know what you are doing. Setting suspension setups is far more complicated that just bolting bits on. sniffle.gif

Somebody I know used to run an old GS thou (with stock but maybe modded frame) that was monoshocked, so it should be possible. You may be way ahead of me here, but worth posting over here I should think:

you still got that pic of the cb900 i sent you?
gsxr front end if i remember-its a question of finding a triple clamp set up that will fit the cb-something from a later model with bigger dia forks is the way to go. same with the rear end a viffer s/arm would look the dogs & if your brother is a prescision engineer-it shouldnt be too much trouble-of course you have been building a shed for -----how long? bum.gif

looks like the cb may be undergoing a radical refit over the winter.
i've always fancied a streetfighter but never had the cash to be able to do one.
however now my circumstances are a little better,
in answer to the question of why? well why not? I just like to be different i see guys riding round in leathers that match their bike colour and think 'that's not for me'
for me half the fun of biking is mucking about with them.

Not at all the same bike, however, I did convert a dual shock 1981 XS650 to a mono shocker. Added 2002 R6 front end (complete) with superbike bars mounted on the top triple clamp. So far so good. It's quite abit of work but I fancy that and anyhow keeps me out of trouble you know. I had to make room in the rear of the frame to accomdate the wider swingarm 10 mm over stock. The real trick is choosing and finding the proper swingarm. The FZR 600 swingarm (mine's
a 1994) has the same pivot bolt size as stock and as I said the width is manageable at 10 mm. If you buy a swingarm make sure it's complete with all the shock linkages and relay arms/levers etc. I also like the idea of the FZR S/A being about 30 mm longer than the stock unit this helps with weight tranfer toward the front. I had to do a offset countershaft sprocket and used 520 chain instead of the overlarge 530. The Shock is a Fox Twin Clicker with ride height adjustment (added by myself) I sourced the parts from good old ebay, and made the fabricated parts at home garage. I've got loads more mods on the thing but this post is about mono-shock (ing) Cheers, 50gary

Go for it Ima, if you scout about you should be able to find the bits you'll need from some other donor bike.

The mono shock will need some fabricating as you have to weld a mounting bracket in the frame for the top mount of the shock. As DP said, a sigle sided swing arm would look trick, you can also use the VFR400 singarm if you can find one. Also Aprilia banana alloy swingarms look trick too, they polish up lovely.

Or if that all gets too tricky, you could look into getting a set of Ohlins/Marazocki rear shocks with the resevoir pots on, i love them, spoted a set on ebay tuther day but i missed them coz i wuz in St Ives, £26 they went for.

Slab yolks are about £220 to get machined down here, you could get a front end with either chunky forks or upside downies and have a the slab yolks milled to fit the new forks and have the CB900 stem fitted.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v498/50gary/ Hi this started out as a Yamaha (1981 XS650 Frame) It's been cut off just in front of the seat and just below the front motor mounts on the down tubes. The steerer head (tapered roller bearings)and the entire forward half and the rear fub-frame are my own design and fabrication (chromoly tubing). 24 degree rake and FZR swingarm mono shocked. the top tube is shorter than the original by 25mm, this combined with the steeper rake takes about 55mm off the front end wheelbase. The FZR600 S/A is 25mm longer. This shortens the wheelbase overall and effectively moves the motor forward within the wheelbase to bias the weight on the front wheel as a more modern bike.
This is a group of six photos that I managed to get posted on line. The bike is 99% finished at this point in time but I've yet to get the finished photos online ... more to come. I hope this may help some of the home builders?
Cheers, 50gary
