Are there any benefits to be had by doing feet a particular way when you stop ? Do you keep your left foot up and near the gears, or your right foot up and near (or on ?) the rear brake ? Do you swap depending upon the situation ?

U should have ur right foot on the rear brake..... rear brake only when doing under 10mph. And same when u start off, right foot on left foot down

Well, that's what I thought (and what I always do) - the reason why I ask is that I've seen some people do it the other way around. Left foot up and right foot down. Just wondered why...

Nope. It depends on conditions etc. I often have both feet down. Sometimes right foot down to cover the gear change at traffic lights (I prefer to be in neutral when traffic is approaching from behind). Sometimes left foot down (esp. hill starts).

Anyway, I try to avoid the Hendon shuffle if at all possible, 'cause it looks silly. wwww.gif

EDIT: I'd better get this in before someone flames me... It just depends on my mood, road conditions, road camber, the phase of the moon... You'd have trouble convincing me that "back brake covered" is always the safest option under all conditions. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it if that's your bag... laughcont.gif

Right foot usually, due to the road camber, unless it's a steep hill then I might hold it on the rear brake. I'm not a fan of the Hendon Shuffle myself either, and when I started riding the brake pedal was on the left anyway.
messymuppet
normally left foot, but only cos that's the way we're told to when training + doing test (prob reason fazer, yared + kaz do too) but whether i continue to do it that way after i've passed + been riding later, dunno,

it's important tho to understand why people do stuff rather than just cos u're taught too......

Usually prefer to put the right foot down and hold the bike on the front brake.
I like the left foot up cuz I,m usually in neutral at lights and need to change gear.
If its a hill start its the other way around.

As with every thing in life, do what feels natural, who,s to say everybody else is right.
Sloth
on CBT i was tought to keep the clutch in and put my left foot down with right foot on brake.

so i will stay like that unless i need to take it out of gear then i will use right foot.
Roddas
well it depends,

Normally right foot on the back brake
Left foot on the floor.

However on some lights I know they are very slow, so on Neutral,

so right food down
Left foot on the gears

and from time to time,. both feet down and a good streachhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

and on very rare occasions, no foot down,,,, rolleyes.gif

I just slow down to almost a stop and do a balancing act...... :tounge:

thats more my techniqe... except I can do hillstarts on most hills without using the rear brake so both feet down... probably a hangover from not being very stable when the hips were bad

All depends on my mood, road conditions and, as others have stated, whether I need a stretch or not.

I also try to trickle up to lights without stopping too.
snapdragon
Both 'cos I'm a shorterse or none cos' i'm goin slow as a slow thing
Anth
Depends on where I'm stopping.

If it's just a junction I put the left foot down (holding rear brake & leaving bike in 1st with clutch in) like I was taught on my CBT, but if I'm at Traffic Lights then I have developed a habit of putting it in Neutral, take a chance to have a stretch and use the front break- keeping my Right foot down and the Left on my gears.
bikerdave
Left foot and cover the rear brake for nice smooth stopping.
Wilf
I usually stop with my right foot down and covering the front brakdepending on the camber of the road or the road surface. I have a tendency at T junctions to stop on the leg that's pointing the way I want to turn.
ima
i tend to put my left foot down, right covering the brake.
the main reason for this seems to be if i put my right foot down my balance goes all to pot.
(mental note must practice more)

As an advanced examiner I still like to see right foot go to ground, although I won't mark someone down for it, but right foot to ground is the mark of a competent rider confident in their own ability and it reflects well on their instructor!

Can I ask why T.C? I feel a pearl of wisdom coming on...

Right foot down - riding a 1978 triumph, it takes me the time the lights take to cycle to find neutral anyway . . . ( or a neutral ) laughcont.gif

I tend to put the right foot down and cover the front brake, some times though i come to a stop on the rear brake and then just sit on the rear brake till i pull of again, unless i am in neutral then i have both feet down and tap on the tank till the opposing lights change and then i gear up and pull of on the right foot, i feel a lecture comin on.

A bad habit i seem to have picked up lately is i put my foot down a milli second early and then have to reposition my foot again resulting in a scruffy stop, this i am remedying by takeing more time when i stop and taking care to put my foot down as i stop instead of a tad early.
oogachaka
Generally i put my left foot down as that is what i was taught and that is what ive gotten in the habit of doing. However there are times when i stop with front brake only so i put both feet down or if i am really bored i try not to put either down and see if i can balance. blush21.gif
gixerman
to be honest I put the left foot down coz I am left footed and it feels right.

as for the cover rear brake thing, sometimes if on own but if carrying pillion then normally both feet down

but never really wondered or bothered which foot as long as I dont drop bike I am ok
