Hi All
To keep your wheels, forks , swing arms looking good and easy to clean,
do the following:
After you give it a good clean and let it dry.spray some Silicon on a soft cloth
(don't spray directly on the bike since the spray is very thin and can get on the brakes etc)
Run it on your rims, etc
It leaves a very thin protective layer that not only make it looks shinny but also prevent crap sticking to it, making it easier to clean next.
.
I also use it on the
mud-guard & hugger with the same effect.
You can get a can for £5 and it last a long time,
Hope it helps

WD40 is good stuff but it smeels quite nasty, I have to put up with it at work so I wouldn;t want a bike smelling of it! Does the silicon stuff smell?

Hi Danny,
personally, I don't thing the silicon one smell very strong...
but check before you buy since there are different makes etc...
I use silicon on the black plastic, like indicator, panel etc, and the smell never bothered me.
It is very slippery stuff, so be careful where you go with it.........

i have a spray cleaner called turtle wax wheel cleaner ... works wonders on wheels, forks, dash, and the complex bits around the footpegs ... plus it doesnt need any work, spray on, leave it a bit while i clean the fairings ... then rinse all off ... it smells like window cleaner though ... and the box says its safe for ABS hubcaps so i suppose its ok if it gets on the fairing ....

^^^ Yeah but you only have to put up with Camel S**t, its not the same as salt.
That stuff is a nightmare (salt that is)

for that real heavy grime on the wheel rims i use bath mousse, removes it a treat.
but remember to wash off the residue, and then seal in the shine with silicone spray.

I am not sure I can call myself English..... even though I have lived here for along time and do enjoy a nice cup of tea..
so probably not an English thing.....

Me neither, Furry Boots you come from Roddas? I'm Scots and enjoy a mug of tea now and again.
Was only joking about the cleaning thing

, I clean my cars and bikes every time it rains. I do wash them after winter though to get that crusty salt of of them.
Seen loads of nice shiny bikes and nice new leathers in Callender today, posing gits, probably the only time they get out is when the sun shines.

I used to work for a company advertising WD40, I wanted them to do 'handbag' sized cans for the girlies who wanted to catch a biker... there was also a plan for Castrol R or Gunk versions and using Methanol as the propellant
A couple of dabs on the wrists and a quick squidge down the cleavage before an evening out .... Sorted!
... they told me to go away

....they didnt go for the 'Gunk granules' for cleaning cases in the dishwasher either
I spray mine with WD40, once I sprayed the downpipes to protect them in the rain.
I thoiught this was a good idea until they got hot and I was sat in a cloud of smoke and the traffic lights ! !

Seems like WD40 was for all things, every Marine had a can in their locker years ago, don't know about nowadays. There was nothing like a nice clean rifle/jeeps smelling of WD40 and it wasn't slippy like oil.
Smelt real bad as your weapon got hot on the range though.

If the smell of WD40 is not your fave try GT85. I prefer it over WD for penetrating the o/x rings on a chain and if you spray lightly over your switchgear and wipe free it brings them up black again.

Of course bikers care what the bike smells like - there's nothing better than the fuel/oil/machine smell when i pull the cover off my bike.
I'll have to go and rub the missus against the bike to get her smelling of it too
Use that silicone stuff on the bike as it is a great thing to bring up a shine - just be bloody careful - Silicone is a very effective lubricant, if it's on your brakes or tires or any other bits that you want to maintain some grip (saddle for example) you're going to come unstuck very quickly - excuse the pun

Eeehm

This silicon spray cleans and then repels dirt ah!! Is it safe to spray on kids?

The switch gear on my bike is looking grey I’ve tried a few things which product would you people of wisdom

recommend to do the job.
I’m not going to comment on smells as this seems to be bordering on fetish's

Any way if you can smell it; you’re not going fast enough

The silicon spray is good for plastics that are looking a bit sun-faded.
Don't be tempted to spray it on your seat though.

I use wonder wheels on just about everything metal, cleans it no problems

Carb cleaner is good for those stuborn marks but keep it clear of your plastics or you could end up with horrid marks on them

Good tip Roddas, makes wheel cleaning a doddle. For those of you who do not appreciate the aroma of WD40, try GT 85 as recommended by Bluebrakes. This has a delicate bouquet much more suited to hardy motercyclists.

check if it is ok on the visor before......
Not 100% sure it is ok on the visor
I normally use it on the bike,, but not on the helmet...
You can get in on any DIY store,,,, plus Robert dyas etc.....
cheap and last ages.....

wd40 smells great, i only use it for spraying in my ignition and seat keyholes though as they tend to get a bit stiff.
never tried silycone spray, sounds a bit silly to me!
im not too fussy about my bike though, some folks are really anal about it but i dont get much time off work so i'd rather be riding the thing than bloody washing it, i cant think of a more tedious endevour!........................i do sometimes though!

i wouldn't use WD40 on the paint work

, it is a petrol based product, so it will attack the paint finish, GT85 (teflon based) is a much better product, WD also attacks and dries out rubber seals and joints so dont ever spray any in you're forks
in fact never buy WD buy GT85 instead, it does all the stuff wd will do without knackering you're bike

well
I will give a go on GT85 next time , just in case.....
but I was not talking about spraying Wd40 on the paint,, other than on the wheels when cleaning.....
Silicone spray is safe on paint as far as I know.....
at l have used it for about 5 years and so far so good....
but for the tank, fairing etc,,, I have proper Paint wax...... just to be sure,,,,,

The only downside of gt85 is that it contains a lot of propellant and so I rarely empty a can, normally chuck it when there's still some sloshing around

If you know someone that works in plastic injection moulding ask them to get you some silicone spray from there - some kinds have a metal protectant mixed in
