Hilux pick up is number 1, I have a Hiace van with the same lump in it so know the brand. Have looked at a few 3.0TD Surfs too but TBH the whole area is new to me...I'm self employed in garden maintenance and last winter getting about in the snow wasn't good with the van !! I thought a pickup would be versatile but open to suggestions wink1.gif

Surf's are brilliant, and more than capable off-road too cool2.gif Steer clear of the 2.5TD though, I've not heard of a single one that hasn't had a head go. It's also a little underpowered. The 3.0TD is a much better bet, and don't have problems with the head (usually). The thing I liked about the surf was that when you're driving it, it's like driving a car. You sit in it like a car, it handles like a car (even in my father in laws that has been lifted and stiffened) - you get all your home comforts. That's why I also like my Jeep Cherokee - I've got all my comforts, and a 4.0 litre tourqey lump that's really fun, the only thing I don't like about it is the 10mpg I get out of it...!

Cheers,

Jon.

Defender 110...

brilliant on any terrain, loads of room to carry your garden stuff and good for towing if you need....

its all good as long as you dont mind getting your hands dirty when something needs fixing, and they are dead easy to work on and parts are cheap.

compare the prices of spare parts of a Jap 4x4 and Land rover parts..
stuff like.. prop shafts, cv joints, UJs, starter motors, alternators...

Agreed, the parts are more expensive - but... grin.gif Compare how many times you'll need to replace these items on a Jap 4x4, I'd be surprised if it worked out more expensive in the long run. Besides, you can get plenty of spares on fleabay for Surfs, I think UJ's cost me a tenner, agreed the prop shaft would have been more expensive, but even after the old UJ exploded and did damage to the yolk, the original prop is still going fine. A drive shaft and cv joint was had for £40 including postage, and took one person 3 hours to fit.

So it's not all bad in Jap 4x4 land grin.gif

Try owning a 4 litre Jeep (like I do now). Most off-road modification stuff has to come direct from the US, and the shipping sometimes is more than the item. I also only get 10mpg (at most). However, when I put my foot down on mud/grass/any slippery stuff, the massive grin I get makes it all worthwhile grin.gif Rear wheel drive and shed loads of power is sooooo fun!! All for £650 too!

But - all this aside, if I had appx £6k to buy a really tidy model, and money for spares/welding was no object, then yes, I would have a Defender.
