was poking about for some angled tyre valve extenders this morning so i called in colin appleyards, no valve extenders BUT an oxford titan disc lock at £6.99 should have been £29.99 i'll have one of those please.
Ian
So how's that gonna help you blow your tyre's up? :tounge:
ima
you gotta grab these things when you see em m8 i got the valve extenders just up the road :tounge: :tounge:

Wots ur opinion on them valve thingies that indicate ur tyre pressures ok and also tyre flys.
ima
tyreflys are a bit pointless really, and can (i am told) contribute to valves being torn from the rims, at then end of the day you can't beat a good accurate tyre pressure gauge.
Mally
Just nip to the garage n check mine bout once a fortnight. Now electonic instead of them clumpy hand held gauges. Pre-set to pressure you want add 1 for when you take it off and listen for the ding. Should get an angled valve as it would help access.

The essex advanced motorcylcists group put up a warning about both tyreflies and valve extenders after the chairman, chris ( forget his sirname) had a blow out ( okay, rapid deflation) on his bike following the valve being cut by valve extenders. He had rubber valves with metal extenders that abraded the valve against the tyre due to centrifugal force and pop! the pressure indicators are ok i spose but not all that accurate and make us lazy. They remind me of a devcice that flashes a warning light on the dash if you forget to cancel the indicator - if you didnt see the indicator light flashing how you gonna see the warning light?

FTR a simple twelve volt piezo buzzer in series with lamp will give an audible warning of the indicator being left on - ask EB how effective my home made version was!

main reason i got mine, the comstars are a pain in the erse you cannot get access to the bloody valves no matter what you do, i've tried three different airlines in three different garages now and none of them have lines i can get in with, hence the angled extenders.

wwww.gif what a fecking good idea bowdown.gif

idea32.gif Make it into an easy fix kit and sell it. All parts and instuctions. Cost??? One never knows, from little acorns. Cheers MAlly

sounds a wicked idea!! very useful.......

it'd be good for training school bikes too, as many learners (including myself) forget to turn them off, especially because there's so many other things to think about when u're learning!!!

don't know how it'd work test wise tho, whether it'd be allowed or not
ZOMB!E
Some firm make one already but its over complicated with oscillators and all sorts counting the flips on the relay. If you can stand to hear 'beep-beep-beep etc ' when the indicator is on oyu can knock one up for a couple of quid.
Out of interest i see rs components search facillity is up to the usual standard. I typed '12 volt piezo sounder' and got this ???

When this is the kind of thing i was looking for...

When I think about it I can't remember seeing a kit that will do this. Seen kits for indicating gear ur in, and leds for the rev range. But not an indicator noise maker. Make it louder than a race can and see if the cops think its a safety issue. laughcont.gif

If you buy a twelve volt one you can wire it accross the live and negative or in series but if you pick the latter option youll need two. If you go for the first option youll need a couple of diodes unless you have two realys for indicators when you can pick up both lives and wire it in series with the ralays but be carefull that you dont have all four indicators flashing as a result! Me? AN electronics tech doing that? never !!! Ahem....... verysad.gif
ima
so what are we looking at for a couple of these gizmos?
ZOMB!E
about a fiver
ima
is one of these any good?
99p at maplins for a 12 volt one
ZOMB!E
Yes mate. Just wire each accross the live feed to the indicator and the other leg to the return line and bobs your uncle. Or buy one and two diodes for the same result! ( keep them away from the rain though!)
ZOMB!E
For what its worth oxford i think it is want about thirty quid for their version.
ima
£1.98 a blob or two of solder and a bit of heatshrink insulation.
thank god we are blessed with brains and the undying need not to buy the latest piece of mass produced sh!te. bowdown.gif
now where did i put that big cardboard box and that speaker cone?
ZOMB!E
It always seems to me that most stuff on the market ( electronic - elctric ) can be knocked up if you have the desire and almost always for less money that the flash boys charge. Especially stuff like this which works on such a simple principal.
ZOMB!E
Box and cone!! Just got it!! wwww.gif wwww.gif

haven't really mucked about with electronics since my college days.
but i'm feeling the need to get out the soldering iron lately.

Before fastfitter beats me to it - if you wire these things in series with the lamps make sure they can take the current ( typically a couple of amps or so - 12 volts and twenty five watts -ish). Wire them accross the live and return for a sfer no bangs option! ( i rob my bts off medical eqt being scrapped so can get all sorts of specifications).

Angled Valves might be ok- IF you could take them off and put them on easily.

You could keep them under the seat and when you need to pump your tires up- put them on, and take them off when the tired are inflated.
Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick here?

Those Tirefly's look ok ON THE RIGHT BIKE!!
I've seen too many of them on scooters and on Chav motors, blue to match their neon spray nozzles and under skirt lighting kits.
Plus they attract kids trying to nick them for their push bikes- meaning a new set of tires if they try to rip them off the valve.

ok here's my thoughts......................................

See? empty wwww.gif

But seriously folks
*puts intstructors head on*

those bleepers are great if yer standing at lights etc- the students dont normally hear them when on the move-if i had a quid for everytime i've said " can you hear that annoying beeping sound? its your indicator"
we removed them from our bikes due to concerns with Honda rectifiers(BTW Messy, they are OK test-wise)
& the most frequent test failure? forgetting to cancel the indicator!

Fireflys,
Are totally useless, & could be dangerous-nuff said(i just couldnt take anyone seriously if they turned up with them on a bike)

pressure indicators that fit on the valve-see above.

Angled valves, can help with awkward access, but i wouldnt be fitting them permanently-you can get bolt in alloy angled valves-cost more but you dont have the rapid deflation probs(someone is now going to correct me)

the zzr is awkward at garages, my solution is to check my presures at the workshop-course not everyone has a bloody big compressor & inflator/guage sitting in their garage/shed whatever!

my advice would be carry an angled valve with you, the newer generation airlines sometines have a metal fitting on a rubber tube-which should do the trick-if not screw on the angled valve, pump up to+1psi, then remove valve.

Norrie has angled valves on his Triumph RS. I'm not sure if they are a Triumph part or he had them fitted at a tyre change. But they are real angled valves and don't use extenders. I've had the same problem with the VFR. The front disks and the rear disk and sprocket all make it hard to get a air line in.

I have my own tyre pressure gauge, so I really should get a footpump.
ima
the cb's valves are solid, no bend in em whatsoever so angled valves are the only real solution, i've been in the garage and sworn till i'm blue in the face trying to get the airline on, and the one time i did manage to get one to fit i prolly let more air out than i put in just trying to get the right angle. Indicators? Wot are they then? cool2.gif
