hi i got a wee sym automatic 50 to do up for my daughter.got it going perfect[all it needed was a coil]so decided to paint the rusty parts.took off wheels, exhaust and lay it on its side to do the stands.when i put it back together it wont start.thought i must have picked up dirt so cleaned and blew out carb.still no good just the odd fire now and again like before. might be flooded. took out plug and kicked the hell out of it left the plug out over night.tried it again still the same. there is a good spark at the plug, fuel is getting to the carb ok.it was running well until i went to paint it.this is doing my head in can anyone shed any light?

Having it on the side might have jammed the float in the carb.

the float was free when i cleaned the carb.could it be electric yet im getting a good spark?

leaning it on its side would most likely flood the carb, but as you have checked it & it appears to be ok then have you checked the air filter? it might have become flooded with petrol or oil-long shot i know but have a look. if you're getting a good spark then its not likely to be electrics. i would go back to basics, start at the fuel tank, check petrol is getting through, re-check the carb, make sure the float isnt stuck, could the battery have leaked onto any electrical component? i tried not to have too much to do with scooters at work so i'm not sure what the layout is of your sym.

ive tried putting a spoonful of petrol down the spark plug hole and trying it,still the same which suggests electrics or does it?new plug came today,no difference:mad:.box of matches might help.ive got spark, fuel, compression, air.what the feck is stopping it going:wacko:

I know you say you've got a spark, but could the HT lead be knackered, and just unable to sustain the voltage properly?

Of course, another thought springs to mind. Once upon a time my dad rebuilt his MGB, and proudly declared near the end that the timing was either "dead on or 180 degrees out". If it's 180 out, you'll get a spark and compression, but everything will be in the wrong order. Don't know if you've adjusted the cams.

Edit: But as a 50cc it's probably a 2-stroke so I'm talking out of my arris again...
Paul
But it is worth checking the timing just in case something moves when it was on its side. If you have air, fuel and spark then the next thing is timing

it has a cdi box could it be that.what way do i check the timing.i dont have a manual ,would all chinese 50cc 2 stroke scooters be the same?

The cheep Korean scoots are renound for being problematic, i have a mate who runs a bike repair business who wont touch them any more, have you checked the jets in the carb, they are often small and block easily.
BikerGran
Is the plug gap right? And if you've been trying to start it, is the plug clean? And undamaged? Might be worth investing in a new plug?

how can i check the timming if its not running?also it has a cdi does that not set the timming?could it be a faulty cdi even though it has a good spark?

I'm going to say no to that one. If it's liquid fuel that's coming out then it's a carburettor problem. Petrol won't burn as a liquid - it has to vapourise first, which is what the carb does.

One of my mates laid his moped on it's side to get it in a pick up and it wouldn't go afterwards. It turned out that the vacuum pipe from the fuel tank to the carb had been knocked off.

You said you had the carb off and their was fuel coming out of the plug hole. I said the card bouldn't do that, oblivious to the bit where you said you had the card off. Schoolboy error smile1.gif
