Hullo chaps,

Im planning to give my Gn125 a good working over after it seeing very little use these last few months and im stuck on a few points, mainly how to dispose of:
  • brake fluid
  • old petrol
  • carb cleaner

i dont have a car to feed the old petrol to, and i cant really mix it with new stuff too easily as i want the tank off to clean out the taps and for a few other jobs. Does anyone have any tips on the cleverest way to get rid of this cocktail?

i was also considering running a fuel addetive thru the system after the carb clean and fuel change, do you rekon this is worth the trouble or are they all a bit gimmicky?

Take them to you local dump.

Though sometimes, you might get a local garage to add the stuff to their 'waste' (if it's not too much)

Ive taken engine oil to the dump before, didnt realise they would have this lot too. Should i just mix the lot up and put it in the same oil bins they have?

Howard Hughes used to keep his urine in old milk bottles. Don't imagine that helps though.

Just drain the lot into a big can and take the lot to your local dump site,, theyre not too fussy about what goes into their big tank, all gets mixed and recycled in the end anyway.

As far as the fuel additves go most only "assist" the natural cleaning properties of petrol anyway,, i personally wouldnt bother with any kind of fuel (or oil) additive, with the possible exception of 'maybe ?!' injector cleaners,,, but i have yet to try out these products.
If you are thinking your carbs need a good cleaning,, i would suggest removing them and soaking them in a container of diesel (at least overnight) it will strip all the varnishing from the petrol and clean all the crap off.
Will smoke well for the first couple mins after refitting tho lol.

Interestingly enough an old mechanic guy I knew years ago used to add a cup full of diesel to every tankful of petrol in his car to clean the upper cylinders and carb. He reckond that it was far better than Red X and a lot cheaper.

When I had problems with the GT550 missing and not pulling well, I was advised to use a 'fuel system cleaner' and did so for a few tankfuls with excellent results - beats trying to get the damn carbs off!

I might give one a try then, ill let you know how i get on. Diesel will be hard as i think they will only sell me it per 5l at the garage so i'd have a bit of a surplus, maby redex

At the same time, though, you'll get 5l of diesel in a plastic can for the cost of 0.5l of Redex. Depends how much you'll need.

And if you're considering the fact that diesel engines can run on rape seed oil, and reckon on using that to clean it, don't bother. It's full of long-chain glycerol molecules which will just gum things up. In fact it can screw the injectors on diesel motors too.
