Nice bike when you are going fast. I had the SP-1, aka RC-51 here.

Bill, I've heard that some people can find it uncomfortable because of the long stretch over the tank. Any comments.

Thats why I got rid of mine. I thought it would be ok for high speed long distance rides but the strange arm and wrist position, plus the worst seat I've ever sampled, ruled that out. I could have put different bars and a seat on it, but the fat tank still made your arms go into a weird position.

I will say though that the bike is dead stable and a superb handler in the corners. It doesnt feel tiny like an R1, so you do have to muscle it around a bit but the trade off is that I only had 1 small wriggle from the front end in 2 years, and that was cresting a hill at over 100mph and the front wheel getting airborne laughcont.gif I've been riding that road since the early 80's so I know every bump and piece of dirt on it laughcont.gif

Fuel Hog, not much you can do to the bike to make it faster unless you want to sink in major money.

Mine had a Fox shock and spring on it which helped the handling. The SP2 came with a better swing arm and revised suspension compared to the SP1. I think the 2 makes a couple of more HP also. Mine was dynoed at 119Hp and 69. lb ft. Thats SAE HP so it will be a tad higher for you guys I believe.

Mine was owned by the Canadian Superbike champ. It had 300 kms on it and was given to him by Honda Canada. Erion cans, braided lines, Fox shock, extra set of tires, 207GPs which worked fantastically in the dry but were a hazard in the wet. Had to slow down seriously when it rained. Good bike, nothing went wrong with it.

I always fancied one myself. I probably couldn't live with it but I'd love to give it a go.

Beautiful looking bikes.

For some strange reason, in N.America we never got the white SP-2 and until this year Honda had the aluminum frame and swing arm painted a flat black. I like the models you get a lot better.

There's a mod to the "flapper valve" which is supposed to make it run smoother at lower rpm. The valve is just a rubber or plastic flap that covers the air intake thru the steering head, that stays closed until a certain rpm, then opens up. You can make the valve stay open all the time very easily to permit more air into the airbox. Honda supposedly made this so the engine made less noise and it would pass noise restrictions easier.

You can pick up a used, excellent condition SP-1 here for aroun $9500 or less. I think the pound is worth 2.5 compared with the Canadian dollar. The major problem is converting the speedo to mph from kph.

funny that, had a chap in DP tonight on about an sp2, he went to france on it & his mates disowned him.fuel stops every 76 miles ffs
bikerdave
Honda seem to have a habit of doing that with the colours. The white VFR750FJ wasn't available in the UK. It was probably the nicest colour of the lot. The UK buyers only had a choice of either red or black, if I remember correctly.

laughcont.gif They must have been moving!!! I usually got around 100-120 miles. That's with stock gearing. A lot of owners changed the sprockets for better low end grunt. 1 st gear in that bike is geared really high. I was going to change mine but then found a few corners where being in 1st gear without revving the nads off it was an advantage.

I've noticed that recently, a lot of Honda's bikes are fuel hogs.

Follow the thread to "Dirtybill". That's my RC behind my friend's motard. To top it off, you'll notice the VIN number tag is on the frame spar out in the open veryangry.gif

Not allowed to remove it and place it elsewhere veryangry.gif

It spoils the look of the bike having it stuck on there...

Nice paint job though.. I liked the silver on the tank. Very nice. buttrock.gif

I will say that for Honda. The silver metallic is nice and you can see the depth of clear coat on it. I am getting very tired of the Honda Wing that they seem is necessary on every model they produce. A little tidbit I saw last year. Theres a local track that is small, just over a mile long and more suited to 600s and smaller bikes nearby. A 50 something year old ex-motocrosser brought his SP out that was completely stock and other than practice and getting his race license there, he finished 3rd in open production class in his first race.

I forgot to tell you that I haven't heard of ANY problems with SP except for the SP-2 sometimes overheating, and this was from owners in southern US. Very reliable bike!
