I like a set of flat bars but I'm not a fan of renthal ones.

They seemed to appear on a lot of streetfighters for a while. Maybe it was because the original bars were damaged and the renthal ones come in nice colours. ooh2.gif But I've seen a few bikes, where they've been changed just for the sake of it.

Cos they're ridiculously expensive!
They do look good on some bikes, also they can be more comfortable for some folks - but with Renthal you're paying for the name. A bike shop near here sells Renthals and another (unknown) make that look identical - guess which they sell more of? The expensive ones.

Nowt so queer as folk.

I dont like the renthal bars either, i buy a set of cheeper bars (£12/15) simply called super bike bars (dont ask why coz i dont know), they often come with the MX style brace bar, it does reduce the amount of flex in them but i always take them off.

They do provide a nice comfy riding position, my brother replaced the originals on his XJR (have to be carefull how i write that init Zombie), he recons that the diference was great, one of our other lads put a set on his V-Max and he loves them.

I have a set on the beemer and the CB900, boy have they done well out of me, the CB is on its second set. My tool box is filling up with brace bars.

I dont think it is a selling point but they are classed as a modification so i always put them in to my adds if they are fitted.

Billet

What's the big fuss about taking a huge lump of metal and turning 90% of it into swarf just to make a handlebar clamp or pillion footrest or tax disc holder?

Now what I know about metallurgy could be written large on a succesful Suzuki warranty claim, but I do know that metal has a grain. If you cast metal into a fancy shape the grain sort of flows round corners, whereas if you get a billet of metal the grain runs one way, sort of left to right.

So if you start machining it into fancy shapes then some of the bends or corners are going to very weak, like carving a lump of wood into intricate shapes.

Oh dear, it must be terrible getting old and confused mad1.gif

It's not the bars per se I'm moaning about old chap, I've even been known to fit straights to that paragon of cool, street cred and super sports bikes par excellence the RF bowdown.gif

No dear heart, it's folk who'll pay £25 for a set of coloured bars (unless they're purple of course) when they could, like a true Yorkshireman such as your goodself, obtain a perfectly servicable set of shiney replacements at a much reduced price eyebrow.gif
ZOMB!E
Good stuff oldies.

What im getting at is that that xjr in the pic is on ebay and the fact that it has renthal bars is kinda claimed as a selling point. They're not in my opinion, they're just handlebars and the bracing bit looks toss on a bike like that. Ive seen the same on B12's where its considered adding to the value. Its not - its just some bars that would look better on a crosser. Billet? Dont get me started on billet. Billet is something thats used when you cant buy pre made parts - its a compromise gone mad where its considered better than cast - which it isnt for the reasons that the venerable FF mentioned.

Plug is forgiven in fitting renthal bars coz he's only three foot six and since snow white laid him off he needs something to cling to. eyebrow.gif
Ex
I keep being told to fit them to the Max 'cos they'll look cool.

No they won't, they'll look total crap - I'd rather fit a screen.

Oh, I have blush21.gif
ima
i personally think a small screen adds to the effect on the v-max,
they still don't wanna go round bloody corners though.
ZOMB!E
ANY bike will go round corners if you bear in mind what it is1 Ive been humilliated by chop riders before and realised its all down to bottle and understanding of what youre riding. Ever been on a vmax? Any cornering disabillity is forgiven when you whack it open and start hitting the sky!
Ex
Yep, small smoked screen looks the biz and keeps a fair bit of the wind blast off your chest too.

And they do go round corners, 'specially when a few (cheapish) mods have been done. But the real answer is, it ain't a sports bike so don't try and ride it like one. cool2.gif

Zombie - you ain't wrong about sky shots either. No bike has ever made me grin like Mr. Max. buttrock.gif
ima
i've been on my mates max a coupla times, always makes em bite when you say they don't fecking corner.
as for whacking the throttle open phewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Since I rode DP's cruiser, I've a new respect for them. That thing corners great. I think it's the low C of G that helps. I had that thing cranked over good style but it stuck to the road like glue until I was underwater... I didn't give any butt clenching moments either...

I would no longer be ashamed of a cruiser giving the old vfr a run for its money on the twisties.

Acceleration though, now that's a different matter...

Maybe a Vmax is the way to go.

i know a bloke who's selling one bd
bikerdave
Ima, how much and what nick..
ima
not too sure what he's asking bd, but i'll find out, it's a p reg gray import.
only ever really been used in the summer, so it's it's in bloody good nick.
v maxes seem to hold their prices very well.

Is that the one on the web site?

I've got Renthalls on my XR650L. They were on the bike when I bought it.

Renthalls are a dime a dozen here but only found on dirt and dual sport bikes.

The really trick bars are Pro Tapers. Big diameter near the steering head and then tapering off to standard size at the ends. This gives you more force or torque on the bars, which helps in tight trails, mud and sand. Because you dont need as much force to turn the bars, at the end of the day you arent as tired as you'd be with standard bars.

Not really worth the money for someone who is just out to have fun. More of an uneeded race item.

Did someone say V-Max? beer.gif I had 2 of them..............er....well 1 that I owned twice. 2nd time I bought it, I didnt realize it was my old one until I cleaned it wwww.gif At least I knew it had been taken care of for most of it's life buttrock.gif
ima
looks like the v-max isn't for sale after all.
it would seem it's going to live out it's life from inside a garage, what a crime. no.gif

Anyone seen the pic taken some years ago of Kenny Roberts Sr riding a V-Max in the dirt? laughcont.gif

If I could figure out how to post pics I'd post it up. I'm a computer moron sniffle.gif
ZOMB!E
If you have the picture on your computer then just resize it to 300k and use the file attatchment button on the post reply page. If its on the net somewhere just hit the 'img' button and then paste in the url.

I remember donkey's years ago, going to the MCN film night that used to tour the country in winter.

They had a Goodyear promo film that showed Kenny on an XS11, grinding the pegs doing slaloms round cones on a test track .........

Try making the file smaller. I sometimes get that and it works second time round.

I mistakenly posted the wrong pics at first..........duh. The first pic is of KR Jr at the old man's ranch. The next post has the old man on a V-Max.

I posted this on CW.........no, not Celtic Warriors......but Cycle World. Don't know if you have to register to see it or not.
