Full Version: Bandit 400 - won't rev over 6000

Got a puzzler here.

1993 UK spec Bandit 400 fitted with import 1989 engine, but with 1993 signal wheel and pickup. The gearshift wire that would go to the CDI on the import is unplugged.

Carbs appear clean, and cleaner blown through all the holes I could see.

It's a bit of a git to start, but will run and settle to a smooth idle.

It won't rev over 6000 rpm.

Can't suss what is wrong with it.

If anyone has an idea why it won't rev, I'm listening. Cheers.

Sounds like it's still restricted

But how would it restrict? It's running a full power uk spec cdi - If you can use the term 'full power' when referring to a 400!

Capacitator Discharge Ignition is only a form of electronic ignition, there is no reason why your bike cannot be restricted by other means.
I am not 100% on this, but i dont think the 400 Bandit was sold here as a UK spec bike and if it is an import then it has most likely been factory restricted for whatever market it was made for.
For restrictors, i would check both outlet(exhaust) and inlet(carbs) as these are the most common places to fit restrictor washers.
If not, then i would check over the carb rubbers for cracks or wear as it could be that your bike is drawing in extra air, the air filter could also be a suspect.

Definately UK spec, was for sale here for 6 months in '93.

Checked for inlet leaks etc, won't pull over 6000 ish rpm off load, it has UK spec carbs and exhaust for definate.

I don't know what kind of carbs your bike has, but if it has the type with diaphragms, I'd say you might have holes in them.

Has it been crashed/dropped damaging the clocks? does the rev counter work and every light etc?
Most 400 have some sort of bridge or chip inside the clocks, just because its UK spec doesn't mean it doesn't have the chip.. it could of had clocks sometime
I did one of similar age a few years ago with light front end damage and it wouldn't rev

Even if its just an impact mark, check inside the clocks, they use a really crappy circuit which easily cracks

edit where the f*** did Dream Genie come from and where's me Avatar gone?.. sheesh you go quiet for awhile.............

i had the same problem with my b4 a few years back... turned out to be the o-rings in the carbs not sealing properly
reggit
Cheers guys, I changed the o-rings during the week, it now revs through off load, however still won't pull on load.

Connected my vacuum gauges to it and I've got bugger all deflection on 1 carb. Going to look into that this afternoon.

I'll check the inside of the clocks as well, didn't know about the gubbins in there.

All sorted and running well now. Re-adjusted pilots to book settings and balanced carbs, it's like a totally differant machine now.
