Full Version: Bike has possibly been used for track days

Right, I've been tatting with the Daytona for the first time since I got it today and I am starting to get the sneaking suspicion that it has been used for track days (marks on wheelrims, random electrical wires) so I was wondering what is likely to be knackered on it if it has and is there anything I should be particularly checking.

I see in the mags that they advise against bikes that have been used on track but is it really likely to be any more damaged engine-wise than a bike that gets thrashed on the road?

Has anything been lock wired..?

Wheel rims do get a rough time at some tyre changers anyway..and the Daytona wasn't really a favourite track day tool either..the wiring could be down to alarms or heated gripe etc ?

If the bike looks pretty stock and rides well I wouldn't worry too much wink1.gif

I did think the last owner may have had a Power Commander fitted.

It rides fine (although there is still an untraceable rattle during acceleration, think its the sprockets as the shop changed the chain but left the original sprockets on w_nker.gif ).

Just fitted a high level exhaust to it today and will have a bit more of a tat tomorrow and see what the verdict is fcrossed.gif

Even repeated fast group track days wouldn't bother me, so long as the bike has not actually been raced- check no lockwire or one piece belly pan to catch oil, but that's pretty unlikely with this bike (unless there was some obscure one make series I haven't heard of).

But... on the button (or earlier) servicing becomes even more important.

If care isn't taken to allow the discs to cool on a warm down lap, warping is a big potential problem on any bike, but that should be obvious. The very high working temps on track can prematurely age the brake lines, but again that should be obvious.

Engine damage? Unless oil changes have been stretched, I wouldn't expect that as a big problem.

But to be fair, any aspiring track head would run a mile from your bike. It is a lovely road bike & it could be fun on track, but it'd get walked all over by most cheap sports bikes.

More worrying is whether the sign of repeated tyre changes is in line with the mileage- as in, is it honest?

I'd say it is. Most likely the cowboys at the shop I got it from just ripped the rim up changing the tyres when I got it from them as the marks look fairly fresh.

Certainly won't be getting any more work done on it by them!!
