depends on whether its been used or been standing. if its been standing for a while then strip the engine down. last thing you want is to find something like an oil pump seized after you get a mile down the road.
If it been used often give it a good check over and take it for a run

I would get it running, that way you know whether it is a sound engine, start with the heart.
If it runs and sounds ok, i would go for the oil change, weather you keep of sell is some thing you can decide then.
If you decide to keep then go for the complete rebuild as a project.
If you decide to sell at least you can tell people what the engine is like, and if it runs the value will be higher.

The selling bit was the least serious. I bought it as an alternative to the FJR and something I can tinker with if needs be that isn't too complicated. If not it'll get some tidying up done instead. I've no intention (at least at the moment) of getting it into show condition but if the bug bites who knows.

go for it ian give it a good clean up, turn it over and see what happens.
is this gonna be your project then?

Could well be depending on what I find when I get a proper look.

Drain the tank and put in fresh petrol start it up to warm the engine, change the oil, lube the cables, check the tyres and brakes.
Just start it up and go for a ride.
Give it a wash and polish.
Strip it completely.
Chuck it in the shed until the weather warms up.
Advertise it on e-bay and see if I can get my money back.
Why would you want to do any of that to a Bloody Sore Arse

Give it a wash and polish - make it feel better!!

How did you know about that, the clinic said they would keep it confidential

Where's the option for...
QUOTE
Pull it in to the kitchen, gently turn it over,, put fresh oil in, turn it over some more, sit back and prob gently with screwdriver until the weather warms up a bit ... move it outside, add fresh petrol, fire it up , check RAC cover and mobile battery charge and go for it

BTW Remember the valve seats were probably designed for leaded petrol, if you intend to do miles on it then you might want to use a fuel additive or get new seats put in

Talk to it nice like then smack it with a stick. Wont do any good but it doesnt hurt to show it who's in charge from the outset. HTH.

I'd draw the curtains and hide behind the sofa so they'd think I wasn't at home
Fire it up and remove the oil tank cap. Just inside the neck of the tank there's the return pipe, should have oil pumping out if the oil pump's ok. Good point of Shebee's re. the valve seats, worth checking out.
Ride it round the block and marvel at how good modern bikes are.
Put it at the back of the shed, cover it with a tarp and go out and get drunk. With luck you'll forget you've got it

actually it was end of March but one can live in hope.
Well I've charged the battery, changed the plug, put fresh petrol in (including additive) and found that the lights worked until I snapped a connector on the ignition switch making sure everything was connected properly so that'll be getting replaced

. No life from the engine yet and the dip/horn switch was held together by insulation tape (as is most of the wiring harness so that may have to go too) and is now in the bin. Still the horn works when I join the two wires together (its the only bit not connected thorough the ignition switch)! Looks like it'll be a while before the first run
