The cb 900 is running sweet as a nut now (apart from the small backfire on the overrun)
But it has a knock on the bottom end which sounds like it could be the primary drive chain. Anyone had experience doing one of these? is it a full engine strip or just the bottom end?
I don't have a manual yet but i'm hoping to get hold of one soon, just thought i'd ask about before i started.
As most of you on here know i'm not afraid to spin the spanners a bit (remember the gs engine swap?).

I reckon Ace is the man on this. buttrock.gif

As it's the same basic layout as the GS range I'd say it was a full strip. You can usually get to the gearbox by splitting the cases and leaving the head and barrels on, but the primary chain is looped over the crankshaft so it's got to come out, unless you can split the chain and rivet up the new one.

I'd guess it's a hy-vo chain though so I don't think this is an option. Decent sized bench req'd verysad.gif

Hummm primary chain, now which one is that. Interestingly enough my cam chain is rattleing like a baby with a new toy...

I had the rocker cover off tuther day, there are two chains, one runs from the crank to the exhuast (front) cam shaft, the other runs from cam to cam, tried the adjusters but no change, funny though, it happened all of a sudden like.

But as for the primary chain, crank to gear box i assume... sorry, i rarely go much further than the topend and barrels. But i had a CBX750 that had a rattely alternator chain, similar to the primary chain in as far as it is driven by the crank and i was told that the best (and probably only) way to sort it out is to take out the engine, turn it upside down and as FF said, split the cases.

awe farts, looks like it's gonna be a spting job then.
it's way too fecking cold to be pulling engines to bits at the moment.
i'm getting the frame and running gear powder coated in march so it'll have to wait till then.
might even have to go the garage route yet...
