I got this bike trailer see, it was a freebe, home made but is good and solid. But... when it is loaded it sways at 45mph+, quite concerning at times.

I think it is coz the bike sits slightly more to the rear of the trailer lifting the back end of the car up a tad. I can rebuild it so the bike sits more to the front of the trailer, but i thought that some one might have some advice before i get busy with the angle grinder and welder.

I can post pics if it would be a help.

I don't know what would happen but you could try adding ballast of some sort towards the front of the trailer.

roll the bike on backwards????

Yeh.. i thought of that but i would like sumut more permenent realy..

I would say move the bike forward or you can get stabilser bars to fit on the tow bar
Ace
yeah, i think that is the way i'll go, just wanted a second... third... forth...... oppinion.

Is it definitely the loading? Couldn't a brake shoe which is binding cause this to happen?

the weight bias needs to be more to the front, than the rear-whats it like without a bike on?

try some ballast up front as wilf said, if it improves then you need to shift the centre of gravity forward.
of course you might want to check that the squareness of the trailer-if the constructions not square, well it'll go where it wants really.

Chears DP, i wuz waiting for some one to say sumut about the construction, i am sure that the construction (Shape/Size/length) is an important factor but i am not sure what areas of its constrution to look at, some may have more affect on how it performs than others.

I will try the balast idea, but i think i also need to extend the rails along the trailer to get the bike further to the front.

Thanks for your ideas chaps...bowdown.gif

if you really want , i'll measure up the 2 bike trailer i used to haul Imas resevoir reffugee from whitley bay to leeds (with a 1 litre micra as tow car, boy that was fun!)

Mmmm the perfect car for towing. I'll try sorting the weight balance and see how it goes.

nope the perfect car for towing was my v12 daimler vp-we used to proddy race lc's years ago-3 bikes on the trailer, 4 of us in the daimler-weekend heros off to cadwell or oulton park.the overnight journey was favourite, the bikes often went faster on the trailer than at the track(2am sat morning, not many police cars about -hence the car could easily get up to about 120-130 if desired mad1.gif )

I reckon moving the bike forwards will help a lot. Can you lower the centre of gravity of the trailer, drop the whole chassis closer to the wheels?
Ace
D'no, i'll have to look into that posibility, might be best to move it on if i have to put that much effort into it. Have to see.
