Full Version: Track Days

Judging by the majority of posts on the board quite a few of the people on the board are reasonably new to the biking world and a track day isn't something that you have really thought about. Track days are the most fun you will ever have on your bike. Regardless of what your skill level is, if you have never been on the track you will come away feeling like what I can only imagine a junky feels like after a hit. It is amazing and will in my opinion give you a better feel for your bike than 5000 miles on the street . The other bonus's of being on the track are that if you do make a mistake there is usually 50 or 60 feet of grass around the circuit to allow you to recover or allow you a softer GETOFF. There are of course risks involved and I would hate for someone to head to the track thinking otherwise but there are ALWAYS dedicated medical personnel dotted around the track for immediate assistance.

The reason for my rambling is that once I am firmly back in the Mother-land I will be attending quite a few track days and hopefully by then will know you guys a lot better. Thought it would be good to maybe get together and cook a few sausages. What better place to do it than at a track day. For the ones thinking this isn't for me, there are usually 2 or 3 different levels so you won't have to go out and feel intimidated. sh!t you could just come and eat sausages if you want. What ya think dudes and dudesses??? beer.gif beer.gif

I've never tried a track day myself but I know falcoholic has done a few at Knockhill. It is always the pain thta could hit me in the wallet that puts me off.

Maybe I'll give it a go one day, just not sure yet.
Shebee
Im not into track days either, but I'll meet you in a wet field to get drunk and share sausages mad1.gif
devilpaint
I'll meet you for soggy sausages, n warm beer, but i wont do a track day, race school yes. track day, too many arrisholes thinking they are the fastest thing in the land for my liking.at a track day you can be wiped out by ANYONE, doesnt matter how good/careful you are.the paint on my bike is £100 per litre, perhaps the scots in me comes out a bit much wwww.gif

Err, after Mad Sunday on IOM I think I'll pass... scared meself witless and I was going slowly... as for the "fast" laps (no lauging at the back swivel.gif ) I can honestly say that I have medical treatment for a shrunken sphyncter wwww.gif blush21.gif

Maybe one day... but not on my current bike... in fact not on a bike I own I suspect Oo1.gif

But, happy to swap sausages old chap lbhh.gif if that's what gets your gander up Oo1.gif

This year, a few of Knockhill's midweek track eveinings were FREE, that's right, nada, gratis, sweet f-all. Best way to spend a summer evening IMO. plus I got to ride the road there and back which is always fun buttrock.gif

In any case having ridden most of the top tracks, Laguna Seca, Philip Island, Hockenheim, Assen, Spa, Nurburgring (the old one), Monza, Valencia etc, there is no track in this country which appeals to me I am afraid.

Oh, you've got MotoGP 3 as well then lbhh.gif wwww.gif

Been there, done that eh T.C, we had a member that said the same about rallies, Baah humbug laughcont.gif

I have been to a couple of sprint races, i would love to have a go at that, but i'd have to have a purpose built machine, i could not take the chance on wrecking my own baby.... oochy coochy Cb oochy mad1.gif .

I also could not afford the one piece/two piece zip up leathers required by the regs, also i have removed the gold sticker off my Bieffe naked helmet and i am not wearing my lovely new roof Diversion... oooohhh noooo...!
nickr6
A lot of the track days supply bikes and leathers and lids etc. Only FZR400's I know but at least you can screw the balls off them and then give them back in a Tesco carrier bag with a message saying " Ooopps".

I don't know if i would ever do a track day but i would love to do wheelie school (hint hint ravinmadrider) have asked for it as my birthday pressie.

I ain't got the staminer for racing not only that but i couldn't do that to my lc in case i drop him (sully) and the fz is too long in the tooth and a gutless wonder. As for hiring an fzr 400, my friend has one they are tiny, i am six foot with a 36 inside leg there ain't no way i would be able to ride without stopping every five mins to get rid of the cramp.

Off roading appeals more than track days, i know some mag folk did that this year and rated it..
nickr6
Wheelie school !!! You must read the same mags as me. Wheelie's are easy eyebrow.gif but there are a few different ways to get it up not including Viagra wwww.gif First is accelerate to a reasonable speed in first gear, snap the throttle shut which compresses the forks and then lack it open again. This is not the recommended way because the front end comes up very fats.

Second and better way is to accelerate to close to the bikes peak power/rpm and dip the clutch for a fraction of a second and up she comes.

After it is up you need to find the balance point (With your foot covering the rear brake) and then change gear. DONT squeeze the front brake like some have done. When the front end does come down you want the wheel to turn fcrossed.gif

My best advice for wheelies is Don’t do them. You only ever do them to show off and that isn't what you want to be doing on a bike unless you are Mr Rossi buttrock.gif buttrock.gif ( Yamaha next year, Yeeeeeeeeeehhhhaaaaaaaaaa) and he knows a thing or two about riding. Secondly when your front wheel is in the air all the oil in the sump ( Strokers need not apply) is towards the back of the engine and nowhere near the oil intake pipe. Your precious bike is running with no oil in the system. Finally, forks are a marvel of engineering and are designed to provide damping at a range of frequencies. They are not designed to have 2 or 3 hundred pounds of weight come crashing down on them when the front end touches down. The seals will burst eventually and at best it will cost you an overhaul of the forks. It could , if you don't no you have just burst a seal an agricultural experience resulting in a written off bike.

I know riders will still do it, sh!t I always did it, and paid for seal kits, new windscreens that cracked, new chains that lasted 10 minutes. I didn't F*ck up and end up in a hospital bed or worse a wooden box. That wasn't down to my skill, that was down to pure luck. Sorry for sounding like an old fart cos I’m not, come out for a ride with me and I will kick your arris at every turn, but I have learnt when and where I can take risks and what the outcome of a mistake could possibly be. If you want to do all the stunt sh!t, get yourself a KX125 and do it in the dirt. When the Beetles said " Why don't we do it in the road" They didn't mean wheelies. laughcont.gif laughcont.gif laughcont.gif

I kinda guesed it wasn't aimed at me, don't think viagra would do much. I'd come too if me lc was up to it, and someone was paying the air fare.

As for wheelie school i just want to learn how to do it in a controlled way, so its safer, my lc wheelies for a past time, i have to be carefull pulling off a traffic lights after riding the fz, i get used to riding a gutless wonder then get back on my pocket rocket and all hell brakes loose.

Soon the fz will be gone and a new toy will be had possibly a fazor 6oo not 100% sure yet but my lc is sooooo!!!!!!!!!! much fun wwww.gif i don't ever want to part with him. fcrossed.gif .ah, better stop now getting all sentimental..
nickr6
OK.... So thats T.C D.P. and myself on the track swivel.gif swivel.gif Can't refuse now after displaying your feathers like that boys. Anymore willing to step upto the line ???
nickr6
That would be very irresponsible of to do such a thing and wouldn't send out the right message to the less experienced amongst us. Screaming round the countryside in a large pack, disregarding the laws of the land, who ever heard of such a thing eyebrow.gif eyebrow.gif eyebrow.gif Sounds like a plan, just so long as there is a good curry and a few swifties afterwards buttrock.gif bowdown.gif bowdown.gif bowdown.gif

OOhhh... more testosterone than a lads night out, more balls than a two tier golf driving range.

I hope the curry and beer comes after the scratching session.

I can match if not out ride most of the lads in my club on my CB which makes me larf, it is a 22 year old americain imported cruiser with spongy suspension, 19' front wheel 16' rear and a shaft drive but it has a low center of gravity, 10 speed box and seems to have a lovely tight frame... But it is more down to my confidence not so much that i am more skillfull than anyone else.

However i would opt to join Blandy and BD in holding the coats, drinking beer and eating curry, i can hold my own whilst riding but have nothing to prove and i like curry too much to miss such a good oppertuinty. Besides, i cant afford the plane tickets.
