As someone who is about to take my test (DAS) I will hopefully have a reasonable sum of money for a bike (4K budget). Originally I was looking at a new SV650, but following a trip to a local George White I discovered the number of 1 or 2 yearold bikes for sale around the 2.5-3.5K mark. I would like a FSH, buying from a dealer gets me some protection (alough its does cost me more) and there is a possibility of bits being fitted from the previous owner (alarm etc), is there any reason for buying a shiny new bike??? If I go 2nd hand I can look at the Hornet (the insurance is OUCH but if I am paying less for the bike I can just afford it, a Bandit etc etc....

Comments ??

Personally I'd go for a secondhand bike. The depreciation on a new one is too depressing. Was it George White's in Slough? Their prices seemed pretty reasonable, I was interested in a Firestorm they were selling recently but someone else beat me to it.

Yup...Slough.... Sid Morams (Honda), (Also in Slough) have a hornet I have my eye on... I have been quoted over £1100 insurance for the hornet, but I can still dream.....

Second hand IMO. No offence, but it's odds on that you'll drop it at some time and it's much less upsetting on a used bike.

Go for a cheaper bike and you can spend the money you save on decent kit that'll last a few years (if you don't already have it) or on a manual and some tools. Learn to do your own spannering and you'll save a fortune over the years and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and knowing that it's been done. There's far too many horror stories about dealer servicing cock ups and rip offs.

Ask around, you will always find out about someone who bought a bike on a whim and had it locked in the garage for a year after they found out what it is like on the other side of the coin. They will take the hit on the new bike and not you and you end up with a bike with very few miles on it. Be aware that you will have to give it the once over if it has stood for a while. Fuel can go a bit jelly like in the carbs after a while.

I can understand the idea, but I am not going to buy private for my first bike.... I'd rather have the protection of being able to sue!!!!.... got a nice quote from bennets today for 587 for a Hornet... its back on my interest list!!!!

I picked my 2001 Y-reg Sprint RS for £4800 at a dealer, it only had 1880 miles on it and was 2 years old. A new one would have cost me over £6000, look around MM, you never know what you may find smile1.gif

nod nod... especially with the onset of black ice and slippy bits... also then you will have some spare cash for the next one!

Well it looks like I am going to avoid all the good advice and go for a shiny new SV650, the price is just too good, and I have seen yr old SV's for £200 less than I am going to pay.

The problem with dropping it is going exist, so mushrooms are first on the shopping list...but as its a new bike it might help me to think just a little bit more about riding my shiny new bike.... and less about seeing how fast I can squeeze through that gap...

The main reasion is if I buy from new I know how its been handled...its been run in and not shagged, only dropped up the road by me and not my some racing muppet, and the only wheelies it will do are the inadvertant ones..

err what exactly is the difference??? Actually I am probably going for the suzuki 'frame protectors'... they come as a nylon bit and a ali mount.. total around £80...ouch

I though a mushroom was a generic part...

the only thing mushrooms are good for is eating.

Try these cheaper than Suzuki and probably exactly the same.

The few of you who have met my mate Norrie, may know that he is a manager in an engineering shop. He's pretty sure he can make the bungs in the shop.

For somebody that turns all sorts of to a very high spec, he's pretty sure that crash bungs would be easy. Even the best quality ones.

We just need a close look at some to see how they fix them.

Yep - was at Fowlers in Bristol on Sunday (1st time out for a while and scared myself fecking witless as I appear to have lost the art of leaning the bike entirely... makes for very wide cornering blush21.gif ) and they had:

Suzuki SV-1000S, 1 year old, 90 miles on the clock? c£5k I believe although they had sold it that morning...

Its our host that's pissing around with the database server. When I moved us off of the last host that was crap, I already had this host as a backup. I put the forum on and it seemed to run okay, so I decided to leave it and have a good look around for a new host.

I'm testing a self managed linux host at the minute, I just have to make sure my linux knowledge is up to the job. blush21.gif If it all works out okay, we'll be on our own place and we won't have to worry about people upgrading stuff and not telling us.

We've had that error a few times and I've repaired the tables but from what I've seen, its not a problem with the forum software.

If anyone sees the problem again, drop us a line at admins@ukbikeforum.com and we've get it fixed.

That would have been a bit early... I think... I'd be on a 600 Bandit... that looks a little like it's had the fairing from an early VFR slapped on the front... laughcont.gif

Having reviewed that post...

I know that I was on a 600 Bandit... just not sure about what time I wandered in blush21.gif
