Full Version: Searching woes

Hello,

There's a wealth of wisdom and information in the topics created since the forum's inception. I find the search facility frustrating when trying to tap into that knowledge. You can only search for a word or a phrase within a posting.

I use another (non motorbike related) Internet forum which also uses the Invision Power Board software. That search allows proper keyword searching:

apple banana Find posts that contain at least one of these words
+apple +juice Find posts with both words
+apple -juice Find posts with 'apple' but not 'juice'
apple* Find posts with 'apple' and/or 'applesauce'
"Some Words" Find posts with the phrase 'some words of wisdom', 'some words' but not 'some noise words'

According to the footer of the web pages, UKBF is on version 2.1.7. The other site is version 2.0.4 so I'd have thought 2.1.7 would include that feature. Could it be enabled?

Another search woe is that it limits keywords to 4 characters or more. There's quite a few TLAs people use. I was recently trying to search for BSP (as in British Standard Pipe thread) but the search rejected that keyword. I understand having an keyword exclusion list for "the", "a", "and", etc. The really common cases to avoid unnecessary server load, but other ones would be helpful!

Thanks for listening,

Pete

I'll see what I can do. I'm off on holiday at the minute, so I'm avoiding spending too much time at a PC working on something else. wwww.gif I'll get around to it though.

There was a reason for the four letters in the search, which was to do with the search indexes.

I've made some changes, which you can test out and see if it makes any differences.
