I recently inherited a new helmet which also came with some cleaning solution and lint free cloth, I,ve opend the cleaner and it smells suspiciously like isopropyl alcohol ,im guessing its just mixed with another chemical (anti smear solution??) - has anyone here used isopropyl on their helmets alone. Reason for asking is that I buy it and mix it 50% with distilled water for cleaning other items such as LCD monitors and other comp bits and wondered how it would affect the visor if i was to use it once my solution ran out.

I've always used just washing up liquid myself.

Then I go over the lid with wax, makes getting the stupid flies off a piece of pi$$ grin.gif
Wareshome
Isopropyl Alcohol

99.953% Pure Anhydrous

General all-purpose cleaner. Safe on plastics. Extra effective with the use of M.G. Cat. #'s 852 and 853 Hog Hair cleaning brushes.

For use on:

PC Boards
Connectors & contacts
Fibre optics
Semi-conductors
Printed circuit boards
Tape heads
Light oils
Office & medical equipment
Relays
Flux

I would be surprised if yours was up to this strength I expect it to be diluted with water quite a bit. Its no good with Coke either. lbhh.gif

Howdy there. Thanks for the info - I do buy it direct from a local chemist in its 99.9% state and I Dilute it myself with distilled water for use as general cleaning, Im aware of what it cleans electrical wise which you kindly mentioned (I remember using for cleaning LP's too!), but was just curious about its use on helmet visors.

Thanks for the info on washing up liqiud GrahamB, something else to consider. I did think about using coke but couldnt get the lines straight enough..... Oo1.gif

I either use well diluted washing up liquid or Mr Sheen furniture polish, or sometimes plain old bees wax. All three do a wonderful job

Can’t comment on how correct any of below is but from what I've read on here & been told on my CBT you shouldn't/should use:-

Don’t use Fairy liquid as it contains salt, which will scratch and bloom your visor through time.

Don’t use any “cleaning products” even though they are described as helmet safe as there has been cases of people cutting the helmet apart & finding even just the vapours from them having degraded / dissolved the polystyrene around areas such as the vents.

Use water & kitchen towels! and if it's really stuck on, leave it with the wet towel on it and have a beer. When you come back to it will be softer and easier to remove.

Legal Disclaimer: - Of course don't drink after riding, Neither my instructor who told me this technique, nor this site condones irresponsible behaviour.
Always drink responsibly (and in large quantitys). lbhh.gif

I have been told (and have tried to no real problems) using baby shampoo on the inside, I found the foaming one quite good.

On the outside I tend to use washing up liquid and the visor cleaning stuff with the little foam pad that you can get in any bike shop.

I use a small piece of chamois leather the same size as my vizor, lay it on the outside wet, leave for about ten minits and then use it to wipe clean.

Never had to use any special cleaners or polish.....I think it's a marketing ploy to get you to spend money (save it for a beer!).

As soon as I get back from a ride, I have a bucket with some water waiting in the garage. Use a soft sponge (any car type sponge will do), wipe the visor with a reasonable amount of water and then clean off with a "scrim". A scrim is a cloth used by window cleaners, you can buy them at any janitorial /cleaning outlet, ask for a pre-washed scrim as they are softer. If you buy one that isn't washed you need to soften it by boiling it first to condition it. Sounds like a lot of hassle but they last years and will leave your visor smear and scratch free (and helmet).
