On my way back from the nec yesterday and having got totally lost around tamworth somewhere.
I noticed toll booths on the M6.
So what do we all think good idea or just another money grabbing idea from our beloved government.

the latter, do we not pay "road tax" already

Indeed we do dp (see my other thread)
but if roads were to become privately owned surely the onus would be on the owner to keep the road in a good state of repair.
Unfortunately we don't have that many arterial routes in the uk so if the road was crap what alternative would we use?

we have one in leeds as a trial thing (come to think of it we have a lot of trial schemes in leeds)
Your car reg is logged everytime you use the road and at the end of the month you get a bill. Can't comment on the outcome yet.

Another road scheme they tried here is the multi passenger lane
If you're in the car on your own you have to travel in the inside lane.
If you have a passenger in with you, you get to travel in the outside lane.
At the end of the duel carriageway the road has lights with the outside lane getting priority over the inside if you get my drift.

The idea being to get people to give workmates a lift into work.
Unfortunately there is another road that runs parallel with the duel carriageway so everyone uses this instaed, so the congestion just gets moved around.

With bridges and stuff, its okay but we all pay our taxes and good roads are a necessity for industry. By asking for road tolls, the government just makes our companies more uncompetitive, compared to our European neighbours and not just for delivery vehicles. Company employees have to pay the charges and struggle to find the parking, while the public transport is pretty poor.

No wonder our manufacturing is going down the toilet.

I have rode thro decades of the goverment looking for ways of re taxing us on the roads.I do agree that congestion is at a record high ..BUT..Why do we all moan about it and do nothing? if its not petrol hikes its road fund licence or M.O.T.fee's the list can go on.

I dont mind useing local buses or trains i but I do object to being over charged and humiliated by using local transport that in our area is a long standing joke (get the pun?.)

Whilever the gov does just about nothing to ease the traffic jams by good transport systems that are for the good of the public and not share holders then the problem will not go away and nothing will change other than price hikes to combat personal car or bike use.

well it is really very simple plug

the reason the goverment have not & will not do anything about public transport

is because they never have to use it

I think we all now that, but again we moan about it and do nothing, look at the french, love em or hate em they stand up for what they believe in we used to be a nation of standing up for what we thought was right but over the years they have been allowed to brow beat us until we retaliate no more hence the position we are in now and if we stand for these new tax hikes we deserve it..
