been meaning to put up a post about this for ages..
when i first got my daytona i was riding along and came up tp a roundabout. Car in front of me braked and so did i with the front brake....
thing was.. i kept going ... altho at a slow speed.. "what the f..." i thought.. but i applied the back brake and came to a stop..
the reason the front brake didnt stop me? oil? no.. diesel?no..
there was a piece of a car numberplate on the road face down so the black side was facing up. By pure fluke i had applied my brake the instant the front wheel ran over it and my front wheel turned into a ski!
so beware the dangers of bits of numberplate laying in the road!

EB, I've heard of a similar story with a flattened aluminum can as the culprit. Only that time is was at a corner and the bloke fell off.

There is a lot of debris on the roads and most of it is dangerous stuff.
I will regail you all with a story now from my earlier biking days.
Was following a truck along a main road and i could see something stuck in between the twin wheel on the back.
Truck stops at a junction with me behind and i saw what it was.
A housebrick, think about it for a minute. if that had come flying out with me behind what would have happened.
Pulled along side the truck and told the driver about it, we went round the back and tried to get it out but it was wedged solid.
i don't know what he did after that coz i had to get to work but it still makes me shudder when i think what could have happened.

17 Years ago I was on the M4 in the outside lane, 30 yards in front of me in the middle lane was a lorry, one of the lorries rear tyres shredded into several bits and came flying through the air straight at me. At the time I was passing a car so I couldn't go left I had the barrier on my right and a car behind, I swerved as much as I could but was hit on the foot by a lump of tyre, luckily it just snapped of my toe nails and made my toes bleed, if it had hit me a foot more to the right I'd have been knocked off the bike and probably run over by the car behind me.
A few years later a car in front of me flicked up a metal splinter which hit me in the right eye, I had to have it removed at hospital and wasn't allowed to drive for a week.

Hey EB, dunno if youve noticed it but if you head up to clacton and come off the a120 and down to the roundabout by the car auction place there is a complete number plate actually embedded in the tarmac as you exit the roundabout. It must have come off when the hot weather was here and got squashed into the road by the big lorries and such. Always amuses me when i see it - dont know why!
there was a near accident the other day in layer road. It seems that soime paras were moving house and used one of those massive lorries you see round here. Anyhoo, it was a flatbed and a douoble bed mattress came off and landed on the windscreen/roof of the following car! the car stopped in a straight line but imagine if that had hit you or me or anyone else on a bike!

Interesting that zomb, suppose you came down the road and had an off due to the numberplate, where do you think you'd stand with an insuranse claim?

Thought this thread was going to be aboutt he rig-marole you have to go through to get a new no. plate if you lose or break yours.
You now need to take or send your log book, driver licence or passport to the place you have make up your legal number plate.
This of course will stop thieves putting false plates on cars when they nick em
Or you can just fit a slightly undersize illegal plate - that's not covered by the new regs.

it wont stop thieves at all. they will just go into a car park and nick numberplates off of other cars instead.
its already started and people have been having there numberplates stolen. Then they get letters asking for money as there car has been spotted in central london, or caught speeding etc.

He he - was it a muck spreader or tractor or summat that kept getting tickets for not paying the congestion charge in that london! ghosting they used to call that. I had a triumph herald that picked up numerous parking tickets in brighton three years after itd been crushed at the scrappies!

I received a phone call recently telling me that a car with my registration had been filling up with petrol and driving off without paying from several garages. It was a totally different car to the one the plates were for so the Police asked me to check if the plates were missing, they were off an old banger I hadn't got around to dumping at my parents house, sure enough they were missing.

I had a lodger at my old place that pissed me off big time so rather than kick the sh!t out of him i thought i would hit him where it hurts in his wallet.
So i invited him up to peterborough to see a band play
We left my place in heston me on my XS1100 him on his GT550
I waited until we got onto the A406 the i opened up the bike & set off every speed camera between wembley & peterborough town centre doing a average of 90mph.
When we got to the gig he did not get much chance to say anything about it because the band was so loud when we left i done the same thing again.
When we got back to my place he told me i had set off about 14 cameras
I said that is not a prob as i had a special number plate he says that those reflective plates dont work, i told him no it's not one off those go & have a look.
So he went out looked at the plate & said it dont look special to me what makes you think you aint going to get done.
Easy it is a copy of yours.
he told the court what had happened & they did not believe him
he got a nice big fine & a three year ban
i think it would have been a lot easier to
A : pay me the money he owed me
B : Not piss me off
Oh yeah he ended up getting his arris kicked as well
