Full Version: Paint jobs

Right DP, I read your post about not getting a free hand with paint jobs because the owners worry about the sell on price.

The question is, how do you visualise a paint job on a bike. Do you need to look at a pic of the bike and take it from there or do you follow the shape of the panels? The sell on price isn't a big concern to me considering the age of my bike but I'd like something to advertise the forum and catch peoples eye.

Would you want to pick your own colours or can you still come up with something, if I was looking for certain colours.
ZOMB!E
DP will answer soon but from my point of view you need to make a viff look different to the three million you see parked up the high street if you want to catch the eye. bike enthusiasts notice race colours - paint in mansell colours for instance - or west colours - or Rossi colours. If twer me id go for outrageous and paint it to DPs imaginings ( if there is susch a word ) as he has some sparkle and if you let him loose he wont disappoint in eyecatching stylee.

Well done Davie, draw his attention away from my offer and maybe he'll forget. laughcont.gif

If you wear that tasty leather dinner jacket, he might take you up on any offers. wwww.gif laughcont.gif

Seriously though it is something I'd consider after a few of years when the finish is no longer up to its previous standard and it wouldn't harm the bike's value to much to have it done. This is the first non-red bike I've owned and its probably only because they didn't bring them here in red that I got a silver one which is also the most popular colour (the other colour was blue). When I've finished making the payments on it then I'll have a serious word about making it stand out from the crowd.

PS at least we got a choice, the Yanks only got silver and they do go on about it swivel.gif

I heard from michael barrymoore that it WAS ian! wwww.gif

There comes a point in the bikes life ( read resale value) where an aftermarket paint job actually adds value. Go for it Dave - be brave, be different. bowdown.gif
Ian
Oi! that was supposed to be our little secret.
ZOMB!E
oh and DP, can sir-vix take you up on the previously offered paint job?
bikerdave
I'll maybe go for the bike version of this.

I saw one of those cars with the harlequin paintjob once, fecking horrible. Why anyone would buy a brand new car that looks as if its made from spare parts, is beyond me. Oo1.gif
Ian
maybe they were colour blind?
ima
If you're looking for inspiration with colour just have a look around you nature has some fantastic combinations.
Think about koi carp in a pond and you get the idea.

Davie, i usually work on the premis that the customer is always right-its only if its REALLY a bad idea that i step in. as per our many conversations at the birthday bash regarding paint, i'll steer you in the right direction, gently suggesting things till YOU come to the conclusion I WANT.but i can do you any colour/combination of colours you want.
you want the saltire in white over a candy blue background? no probs, class job m8, the bike lends itself to it.
you want it in metalflake? no probs but it wont look right, too messy, dated even.
Nana, BD asked for the saltire MONTHS ago, but his will be totally different in execution.
Zombie the offer still stands, if thats what sir-vix wants.

due to the increase in traffic on here any one wanting advice on paint etc drop me a PM or email-i cant keep up with the posts on here(its an age thing) wwww.gif

r1 seat unit, (anyone got a spare one?)i love this colour blue
other plans are to lose the clocks,(rev counter doesn't work anyway) single speedo and LED's` smaller headlamp and renthals
mild rearrists, move the shocker mounts, blue spokes, total rewire, and relocate the electrical bitz
i'd like some sort of graphics on the bodywork....any ideas?

i might paint the engine(crankcases. barrels, head) but i hate black engines, (ones that aint ment to be painted)and painted silver looks even worse, anyone recommend a good satin black paint?

if i still have the bike the year after it'll get it monoshocked and 3 spoke wheels grin.gif
ima
That looks not too shabby at all m8.
If only you could do that on the pc for real grin.gif

i've been out with the tape messure, trying to look intelegent
, the shock mounting point will be fairly easy to do, the frame at the back should cut n wield nicerly or even chop off and make a lighter version, the frame is v heavy sniffle.gif , the exhaust should go up higher no probs, the only thing i can see me struggling with will will be the footrests
Anth
Not as cool as Ima's green claw stickers- but the rest of the body... it was a quicky.

i'm hopefully getting the seat unit this week, if it fits, there will be no turning back, not easily anyway, so there will be a standard seat, light, tail fin, sidepanels, footrest plates up for grabs grin.gif

Fear not Ima- if DP does decide to be an ass about it- I'm sure you can put a sign on your road telling some darling little bastard what DP's address is.

I hear the River Wear can be nasty to metal this time fo year. swivel.gif

Anyway why do i need three bikes-i was only pulling Ima's leg, its sooooo easy, poor bugers so wound up, i couldnt deprive him of the cb900.
And as for distracting me-money usually works, but you'd better be quick-next week i have a rotty to keep me company at the w/shop for a few weeks,
nice dog really,

but couldnt eat a whole one in one sitting. devil1.gif

Talking of paint jobs, Dave, are you and Norrie any closer to deciding when you'll be heading down to drop off your bits with DP? I've got the week of the bikeshow off as holiday so one of those weekends would be perfect for me to take my panniers and topbox down too if you are still interested in sharing a car.
bikerdave
I forgot to mention it to Norrie last night but I think it might be a while yet. sniffle.gif
