hes well covered himself if it turns out to be a knacker!
the question is - does he realy know whats wrong with it?????
ignorance is bliss.
if your serious about it and are willing to take the risk dont bid. wait until the closing moments and bid the max amount you want to pay for it and let the proxy bidding do the rest.
ima
my thoughts exactly ignition fault is a pretty broad term could mean anything from a knackered plug to a snapped valve

anyhoo i've sent an e-mail sometimes ignorance can work for you.
if he says "it won't spark" that narrows it down somewhat.
"It won't spark" i can fix "it won't run" and it's goodnight vienna.

C'mon you lot...Chin's up, there's getting to be a bit much of 'watch out for the world cause their takin you for a ride' type mentality here! Ima, at £107 if it's well fecked at that price an you win it, don't lob it down the garden, strip it down, sell it for parts, you'll make your cash back, plus....But I wouldn't try an sell the re-upholstered bit judging by the photo (could have done better myself with a black bin bag, couple of squeezy bottles an three miles of sticky tape), maybe use it for a garden ornament/feature or somat.

Bought my non-runner off Ebay for £150 - Description said engine was seized, so was a big bit of a gamble, got there put bike in 2nd, and pushed - lovely sound of pistons moving up and down (exhaust's were off the manifold) Ok, ok it's not running yet but will be after winter. Hedgehogs hibernate, me I'm locking myself away in the woodshed with me non-running cbx 750 for the next 6 months AND THEN am gonna burn out the back tyre (has a small cut in the side wall) cuttin a donut, AND THEN and theeeeeen we're off.

Seriously though, don't listen to the owners excuses, if the bikes close go an see it before putting your bid in, if it's to far hit the seller with lot's of emails. If their legit' they won't fob you off. An I'm sorry but I haven't met any two wheel devils who "Don't have the desire" ......What's his feedback rating? (joke)
ima
feedback is not too shabby 29pts laughcont.gif the photo background looks familiar maybe pudsey stanningley area and there's a phone number might go have a butchers tomorrow, I'd maybe go £200 for it, the 4-1 looks on it's last legs but you never know.
i can see it now decent paintjob maybe and a good polish up it could be a nice bike, lets face it gsx 550's have a reputation for bullet proof engines.

is that for you or me?
Greasy Joe
Sorry suki. Can't aford the stamp but do have a woodshed, your most welcome. Em by the way, you couldn't bring with you an 8mm spanner, Torx 1.5 screwdriver, couple of self clamping jaws for the welding, pencil, paper (need the notes) an' if it's not asking to much do you think you might manage a DOHC in the rucksack?

In fact why not lob Ima in with the DOHC? He can work on MY BIKE while I trim the grass, prune the hedge, paint the doors, fit the kitchen, replace the slates, and god knows what else I've been told to do, bless her heart, (never saw you there dear, ouch!)
BikerGran
I test rode one of these before I bought the GT550. Nice bike to ride, bit twitchy with the 16in front wheel but I could have got used to that.

UBG says
"16 valve head needs more attention than the GS, especially after 40k. Twitchy handling, fast wearing rear linkages and naff brakes. Poor engine alloy makes for lots of stripped threads. Engine performs well at 7k rpm but can be run economically below that. Possible to burn out the valves and pistons on non-standard exhausts (OE rusts rapidly). Ones afflicted with electrical hassles are cheap enough to fix. CDIs fail with monotonous regularity.
Condition 3 (poor) £250."

I guess non-runner is below cond 3. I read somewhere that the CDI hassles can be avoided by always running it with the lights on. The one I looked at was owned by a bloke at work, he'd had it about a year and had no probs with it, he'd just bought another bike that he'd always wanted.

Why did you think I asked for the room!!

If I wanted to hear him swearing and cursing, or have to patch up fingers and hands for 4 weeks I'd just buy the bloody bike!!!!

Thanks for the offer though - sounds cozy, I'll keep it in mind hearts.gif
devilpaint
if its 5 miles away go & look at it-a picture hides a thousand faults-to paraphrase slightly-& folding stuff might just persuede him to flog it there n then. the big plus is.........................................................................................

you only have to push it 5 miles laughcont.gif
you will buy a fecking ground anchor 1st wont you?
does this mean i can start stripping the 900?
ima
no, i'm still waiting for piccys
NigeC
i've done one of them with a bad spark and it was the pickups...which are like rockin horse sh*t to get!, the rear end siezes on them and cost a fortune to fix, i'm sure the guy i kno had something nasty happem at the front end to

i'm only going by what my mate had.. i thought they where a nice looking bike and the 550 motor is unbustable..in theory! Oo1.gif
dr.gonzo
sorry ima!
just found out about the gsx. sleep3.gif
if i knew i would of posted a bit more possitively. grin.gif
a weak spark problem can be easily diagnosed with a multimeter by testing the resistances of the wires ganin into the coil/s, the coils themselves, the wires coming out the coils, the the end ot the h.t. lead before the plug cap, then with the cap, the plug cap resistors(if it has them).
also u can check the pick up coils.
the only thing that cant be checked is the i.c. ignitors which need specialist equipment.
if he'll let ya check it before you buy and you find the problem your laughing.(however dont tell him you know. it worked for me laughcont.gif )
if ya cant find whats wrong with it ya can just save yourself a lot of chow and lob it down HIS garden. laughcont.gif
you probs know all this anyway like.
best o luck what ever you do mate!
ima
urgh good and bad stuff then let's see how the auction progresses.
I'm a bit loath to get another fixer upper coz most of the scallys round where i live are quite happy to watch you do all the work and then just nick it.
and i'm not going down that road again no.gif
NigeC
i kno what you mean ima, last year we caught a kid trying to nick the 750, but he dropped it gettimg it thro the gate, and did a fair bit of damage, i was so pee'd off i couldn't see the point in fixing it just so they could try again, crazy thing was the rocker cover was off and the cam chain tensioner was slacked off, if they had ran it it would of blown its brains out!! Oo1.gif took till about june to get round to doing anything, but i still found i was waiting for it to happen again, we are sorely tempted to stash the cbx in the hall when its done! eyebrow.gif
ima
I've actually been toying with an anti theft device involving a car battery a pulse coil and a fecking great ignition coil somewhere in the 30kv range bm perhaps eyebrow.gif
ht lead on the frame and wait for the scally to touch it and ground himself.

pow
NigeC
do you know any farmers ima? electric fence units! that will sort the feckers buttrock.gif i kno i've been bitten by one! or BMW electronic ignition and coil, flasher unit and a relay, rumour has it, it would sort any heart defects they might have Oo1.gif

disclaimer......

saint2.gif at no time have i booby trapped doorhandles, resulting in the trainee stores person dropping a large package of lightbulbs, wasn't me, never saw me, can't prove anything swivel.gif

I spent ages typing a reply and then my computer switched itself of and I lost it. I hope you didn't buy that GSX Ima. I had one and had repeated electrical grief with it. I replaced the electronic ignition thingy and the regulator/rectifier with a heavy duty one, which turned out to be faulty and took other things with it. I sorted it in the end but it was quite costly and a real pain.
ima
As it happens wilf, no i didn't, i'm waiting for something, else eyebrow.gif
jase
Another Rattletrap!!!!
jase
I've one of those sitting on me garden awaiting attention! Second gear has disintigrated and the clutch is knacked, but i loved the thing so one day i'll sort it! CDI went on mine, a recon one was £100, second hand ones seem to fetch 'bout £80. The regufrier fried it's self as they do, best bet is adapting a wetdream one, just don't forget to find a home for the extra wire, it's a voltage sensor and withot it connected to something live the reg won't clip the current at all resulting in boiled battery. Some say there twitchy, but i'd describe it as quick turning! You really do get used to it and i never had a problem with losing the frontend, the back always seemed to protest first, but that may be 'cause it still wears the orginal rear shock, slightly past it's best at 70k miles. Seat covers a a bitch to fit and to get looking right!
banana sheene
You STILL not got that going yet Jase? What about the Teapot, is it back on the road yet?
jase
Nope! sad1.gif

Still bikeless, startin' to get the need for some wheels real bad now though. Might have a serious tinkering session tomorrow. (But'll probably end up in the pub! )
Wilf
That same GSX is back on e bay and it's up and running now.
