Full Version: Duff rev counter - can it be repaired?

My Hornet 600 (1998 naked) rev counter is sticky. A new replacement is astronomical (£210+vat) and I've tried 3 2nd hand ones which were all sticky (ignition off they wont drop below 1k). So, asides from being fed up with the never ending saga - I'm now wondering if theres anyone I can post the unit to to get it refurbished.

Tried Google... but the only places seem to specialise in classic car units.

Any ideas?

ps. last resort is to ditch the lot & fit an Acewell digital unit - but I've forked out £100+ for new clock housings, so cant afford to do that!.

theres not a great deal you can do with them nowadays, its a throw away world, if its a common problem even a new one is going to do it eventually unless the problem was resolved at some point, getting it repaired would be scary money, your talking £40+ just to get them interested and test it, only to tell you what you already know, mention motorbike and they will just shake their heads

i'd go for the other option... actually i'm a tight wad so i'd live with it laughcont.gif

Thats my choice too. I've got 2 dodgey units, so I'm making the best of both and putting the circuit board off one onto the other - so it'll read correctly, but not drop under 1.5k. Not that big a deal really I guess.

Thanks,

The answer to your prayers. eyebrow.gif

OK, it won't be much under 200 quid, but what a toy!

I wont rule that out. I've got nowhere with breakers or hornet forums. And to boot, with all my tinkering, the 2 units I have are now both dead. So, its live with a non functional rev counter, or go digital, which then carries the need for a fly screen to hide the back of it.

Learning a sore lesson... cheap bikes are always cheap for a reason.

BTW http://www.acewell-meter.co.uk/index.php does a similar meter for about £150 all in - but it doesnt look half as slick as those veypor's.

The Veypor doesn't look bad at all, even if you don't hide it. It's much smaller and lower profile than any original clocks I've seen. The cabling is pretty tidy too. My flatmate in San Francisco had one.

I've had a good read at the Veypor site and... aw frig it, I'm gonna get one. Awesome functions in it... and my clocks (minus rev counter) are worth a few bob - so ebay here we come!

Thanks for the link chaps - the acewells are a cheaper but much inferior product - and I hear the rev counter on them doesnt work well on Hornets anyway (wont go over 7k).

Anyway, I'll post back to the forum when I get it all sorted....

Well, 2 months later and I'm resurrecting this thread with a happy ending (well, I'm happy about how its worked out!)

My heart was broken trying various 2nd hand rev counters, all of which turned out to be sticky or out of calibration. Seems they are a disposable part with no room for maintenance. Best price for a new one was £235! Yes £235.. and thats just for the internals of the rev counter, not including casings etc.

Anyway, I ended up buying an Acewell 3915. Has the lot... digi tacho (bar type and digital reacout), speed, water temp, programmable shift light and all the idiot lights. Also has multiple trip meters which log stuff like max speed (could be risky that!) and max temp etc... Much as I liked the Veypour, it has NO idiot lights and I see a neutral light as a must have item. Oh, and despite some negative reports about these acewells not reading revs well on Hornets, mines 100% which is possibly due to the fact that I got their latest model??...

Fitting this meant I needed a fly screen for protecting the new unit.. so I swopped the single headlight for a pair of dominators and got a wee screen fitted and colour matched.

Just snapped a couple of (crap) pics in the garage last night after the test run... but I'm very happy with this wee digital gem. Oh.... and did I mention that I got the digi dash for £145?? buttrock.gif

Where did you get the fly screen from? Got twin lights on my bandit but all the flyscreens I've come across are £100+, Alan

Jesters Trick Bits http://www.jesterstrickbits.co.uk - Nick Hand owns this business and I just can't recommend him enough. Check out his ebay listings here http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZjesters...1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0 where you'll find that flyscreen for £52.50. I gave him the paint code and he colour coded it for me for an extra £25. If I were you.. I'd mail him direct and ask for a best price.
