Wasn't the VF750 the predeceasor of the VFR750 and didn't it have some real problems with cam and bottom end failures?

You are correct Ian. They had a bad reputation for the cams, which is why the VFR had the gear driven cams, when it was released. Honda had to try and win back some credibility. However the problem was tracked down the milling process for the cams. The two halves didn't match up because of a new manufacturing practice, which cause the problems. When Honda discovered it, they recalled them all and got the problem fixed by hand matching some part of the head.

It took a long time to discover what had went wrong, so the damage to the reputation for the VF had already been done. People who knew the problems had been fixed, were buying a very good motorcycle for buttons because the reputation had been so badly damaged.

A little article on the history of the VF and VFR. Full of pop ups though, someday I'll get it moved.

Nice article that dave i must admit i like the look of the vf750 but tales of the chocolate cams has put me off.

Stupid poxt air assisted forks, rubbish electrics and more rattles that mothercare. Too complex at this age and price to be a worthwhile prospect. Still think they look nice though.

Difficult to get a cheap bargain on ebay. people seem willing to pay hundreds for bikes that simply arent worth it. Up in the two to three thousadn bracket there're some scorchers though - ZZR11's are cheap as chips ( relatively speaking) but ive noticed that VT500's fetch reasonably good money regardless of age or condition.

The thing that puts me off E-Bay is that you're essentialy bidding for a picture, you could travel miles to but what looks like a decent bike but then turns out to be a complete pile of wank.
There's all this toss about feedback which is all well and good if the moby you've bought has been down the khazzi (it happened to me once)but negative feedback is not gonna help if you hand over 5 or 600 greenbacks and then the bike dumps it's guts all over the road on the way home.

I can see it now "oh no he's left me 1 negative feedback point but i've got 600 quid ah well" you can call me a mistrusting paranoid bastard if you like but I tend to be a hands on touchy feely kind of guy when i buy bikes/cars

know what you mean mate.

always grill the seller and get a butchers at it if you can. I bought my current bike off ebay and other than expected problems its been fine ( a fourty five thousand mile bike is bound to have a failing rear shock for example and this was reflected in the price). the bloke who sold it answered any and all questions i asked and i made the sale ( i collected the bike from cambridge) conditional on it being EXACTLY as described.
Popular misconception is that ebay is the same as an auction house which it isnt and all sales are the same as private sales. What i meanis that if the description is false or major faults are not declared then the seller is liable. i accept that its not that easy i wouldnt have thought to seek redress but then its maybe no easier with a private seller out of bike mart or whatever.

What gets me is why the bidders get carried away and turn bargain bikes into silly priced bikes.
Still hanging on and browsing the listings though - its become something of a hobby.
