my bike today!

got it out of the garage (137kgs - rollox it is!) and had a good ole poke about...

needs a new battery at least, and I'm confused as hell as to how the spark plugs join up to the coil or anything... i need that manual!!!

But I got plans for it... bigplan smile1.gif
paint and chrome...

you wanna know? do ya? do ya?

go on then! Whatcha plan on doing?

Well...
This is today's plan... it may all change by the morrow...

Potter about on the bike for a month or two, just to check that riding likes me and that I like riding (I've got a back problem so need to be careful).
Then, in the nastiest part of the winter when I wouldn't care to be on the road, get the bike in the spray shop (I know someone near me who is both excelletn and very affordable).

Get the frame stripped and re-blacked. Send away the chrome bits for rechroming (they are ok but a bit pitted). Get the tank and side panels sprayed in something like Ford Puma Black with the merest shimmer of metalflake and plenty of laquer. Have a cream falsh running down each side of the tank (possibly)
While all that's going on, get the engine out, stripped, cleaned and chromed where possible in shiney chopper stylee (see P 52 of Sept's BSH for a larger version).
Recover the seat, perhaps with a mild reshape depending on cost...
ANd finally, perhaps, get some nice shiney billet wheels coz I love those things!

As a final touch, once it's all back together, I'll probably have to get another bike and keep this one for sunny days only. D'oh...

Why did I ever start thinking down this road???

the thing is, show me a car and it is all simple.
So I figured the bike would be the same. But the coil doesn't quite look like I thought it was going to, and there weren't any spark leads in the first place. I can figure where tehy are meant to end up, just having a hard time spotting the connections!

Also, battery breather pipes - what are they all about?

Sounds like a good plan. buttrock.gif

We'll await pics when its done. cool2.gif

the coil is an odd looking thing, normally black with a steel mounting bracket, it may have two thin wire coming off it or either a single spade or two,(likewise for the thin wires) the lead which goes to the coil normally screws into the coil, you should see a hole with what looks like a brass self taper screw(pointy end showing) some have the HT part of the coil

the battery breather is to let the gases out, batteries will explode if if theres a spark, my mate had one blow up on a Z750 and it blow the sidepanel clean off the bike and a hell of a bang!, just make sure the pipe is hanging clear of anything metal, the acid knackers alloy and chrome verysad.gif

that sort of makes sense, but not having the bits here Ican't check!
I guess I'm more used to the car coil and distributor set up... that's what is confusing me! i knew i'd get it in the end... the dissy!

90% of bikes don't have a dissy as such, in the cb200 case instead they have two sets of points,(on a twin, normally but we talking jap here!) 1 for each pot, honda tend to run a magneto which, generates the power for the coils, and it doesn't need a battery to run if the bike was the other way round i could of sed for sure! the points could be under a cover on the left side of the head, driven by the cam, if not they are under the flywheel, i could go on but but they get newer, better ideas every make of bike are slightly different
if you get stuck trying to get it going we will gladly help, if you've got didgie camera take a piccie and asjk..."wot the feck is that!!" grin.gif

now, now, it's running isn't it?

leon the coils are generally located under the tank.
You'll find points or pulse coils usually on the right side of the engine under a smallish round cover.
If it's cdi (capacitor discharge ignition) the pulse coils will connect to an igniter or cdi which then tell your coils to fire.
can't remember the set up with points, my memory is hazy.

so this replaces the points, distributor, coil setup, of the car.
it's basically the same setup but wired differently.

you'll also find two carburettors under there instead of one but that's a sore point at the moment so we won't go there. eyebrow.gif

I found the carbs!!! LOL
very similar to old VW ones...
I'll have to look under the engine... have a poke down there... was mumbling about under the seat the other day... all sorts of things under there smile1.gif
