Full Version: My clutch or my box

I've noticed a that I sometimes have problems with the bike sitting in neutral.

No all the time but sometimes when the engine is hot, if you stick it in neutral at lights, it rattles a bit and you get vibs coming through the handlebars and gear change lever, that make it feel as if its about to change back into gear. Pulling in the clutch lever stops all of this but its not there all the time.

I'm wondering if the problem is either with the clutch or the gearbox. Any suggestions on how I can figure out which part is causing the problem.

sounds very much like a worn selector, things are pretty tight inside a gearbox and it sounds like a cog has a bit more movement than it should do, if it was me i'd avoid letting it do it, but i wouldn't worry to much unless it starts doing it while changing gear, gets hard to get the gear or it starts dropping out of gear, it might be worth looking to see if its a known fault on VFR's, and if it is what sort of cost it would be to sort it, rather than trusting a dealer and getting your eyes ripped out and paying over the odds
my lc needed the two second gears...£70 each, plus a selector, gaskets, soon mounts up

I think I'll try and get it done, once the worst of the winter sets in. Or before then, if I have no other choice. I like to keep it running as well. I won't be going to the dealers though cos as you said, I'll just get shafted. sniffle.gif

Woodz knows, shall I say it? Unless it's a Kwak........ mmmmm hope you've got a shed or sumat! Gets chilly during the winter months

Nah, its a honda.

I will worry about it after I get back from Scarborough. Still have to do the valave clearences before then.

The 'Valave Clearances' - sounds like an action in the second world war. wwww.gif

i just got all brave and dropped out the forks and front wheel for some much needed fettling. Front paddock stands ( under fork ones) they're a laugh arent they (NOT!).

Not quite sure how worn selector forks can cause noise in neutral???

I would hazard as guess the problem is with the clutch. Pulling the clutch in silences it theres a fair chance the clutch cush drive or the clutch bearing is a bit worn. Either way its nothing really to worry about but keep an eye (ear) on it and see how it goes.

You may have it sorted by now but in case you haven't, me and ravinmadrider both rekon it could be a worn clutch basket. If so some places will repair them.

My friend had identical symptoms on a gpz600r, she had someone lock up the clutch basket, it solved her probs...

No, I've still got the problems but I've been waiting to try and get some money together before I have a look at it. Although my speedo has now stopped working verysad.gif and I'll be need a new front tyre soon. verysad.gif verysad.gif

Oh dear, well it is worth seeing if it is a rattly basket when you get a chance.

Your bike sounds about the same as mine, one thing goes wrong and before you get chance to sort that out something joins the list. I have two bikes with a list of to-do's. Just waiting for slightly warmer/dryer weather before i attempt a repair day.
Hope you get it sorted.
