At work I park on the footpath chaining the bike to a lampost. The road its on is private, but I believe the footpath belongs the the council. I've been parking there for 4 months but today a traffic warden who, to be fair, was trying to help, said if I park there again I'll get a ticket.
I have heard that as long as you park in-line with the lampost they cant do anything...
Does anyone know the legalities of it all?

Manchester is very limited, Stockport you can park in any reasonable place including car parking bays for free, Wilmslow council couldn't give me a definitive answer! All these areas adjoin one another - so the answer is - it depends where you are

Well, since that post, I've never had a ticket (Touch wood) so I keep parking in the same place!

It is unlawfull to park or ride a motorcycle on a footpath if the tyres touch the ground, get a front and rear paddock stand and they can't do you

By footpath do you mean 'pavement'? In London they've made an exception about pavement parking
which doesn't apply elsewhere in the country unless specifically stated - i.e. they have to make
specifically clear with signage that parking off the road on the pavement isn't allowed, so can
only ticket you in that situation if they've made it clear it's not allowed.

but how will I get the bike on and off the paddock? They'll probably wait for me to take it off and then do me for it!
this morning, I as locking it up it the usual place when a bloke in a car pulled up and told me I cant park here there, he had a right attitude, so I replied likewise "Who are you to tell me what I can and cant do?" - then he showed me his warrant card. Doh!

Pavements are for pedestrians - roads are for motor vehicles. if you park a bike on the pement you are entering a twilight zone of subjective opinion in the eyes of the ticket giver. You are in the wrong - you are parking a motor vehicle on the pavement - why is this a question? wierd. Im gonna park my car on the pavement and then ask on car forums if thats legal. i doubt ill get any serious response to the question.
I await a flaming with a ''what the feck are you on about '' attitude.

Even given the exact link, you'll be redirected to the home page. No great shakes- select tips from the left hand menu on that home page and then pavement parking.
I work in London and I've noticed that many bikers do get away with illegal parking.
It's safe to assume that it's only a question of time before the wardens figure out the parking laws regarding bikes and apply it.
What a ridiculous concept: pay & display, on a motorbike!

I'll wait until I eventually get a ticket, then I'll park in a car park and pay for it. Its only a quid a day. But that means I've saved £200 this year!

Can't be sure if these are still legit but:
between the streetlight and and kerb is public footpath but the other side of the streetlight is not (this depends on byelaws set by your local council and highway authority - not always the same - and is no guarantee)
parking over a cellar or where a building extends underground is not part of the footpath but you may be clamped (for trespassing) by the buildings owners and/or tenants)
use a bike cover and make sure it covers the no. plate, wardens are not allowed to interfere with the vehicle.
Some or all of these little loopholes may have been closed but blocking the footpath will never win you any friends, particularly those in wheelchairs or with prams

It seems to me that many people now feel that it is acceptable to park and/or drive on the pavement, that it is alright to totally block the pavement giving pedestrians nowhere to go except in the road. I'd like to see all these folk get done! I loathe it, ever had to do the pavement slalem with a wheelchair? Park in the road, in a car park or marked bay - NOT on the pavement. Don't be so damn selfish.

I dont park in the way, I park inline with a lampost so they would have to move for the lampost anyway if you know what I mean.

Some dizzy woman reversed into it yesterday! Suppose it serves me right for parking there! She drove off, but I'm going to check my works security tapes later!

cheeky.....
but it was a good answer...
I have stopped on the pavement once or twice,,, ( front of shop ) but only for a short time and it was a very large pavement, so it didn't block anyone.....
Not sure of the legal side of it,,,,, but since there were other bikes there.... it felt rigth...
