as you may have read elsewhere on here the suzi starts.
problem is it only starts if i crack the throttle wide open.

not good.

anyone have any idea why it won't hold the tickover?
i've had to make a few changes from standard mostly to the air intake system. this being a set of s&b filters. i've upped the jetting by 5 sizes from std so i'm running 135's instead of 120's s&b recommend a main jet 3 sizes larger and the chap I bought them from said i'd better go another 2 up from that to compensate for the yoshi pipe.

The exhaust is blowing a bit from the header and where the downpipes join the 2-1 but i thought i'd better start the bloody thing if only to find out if the pipes were blowing. could this be it?
i've cleaned a blown through all the jets.
and put fresh fuel in.
but tbh i'm starting to run out of ideas.
clues anyone?
GING
Could it be an ignition problem?
One of the superdreams im working on wouldnt go over 60mph and that was down to the speedo, dont ask me why i didnt fix it.
Good luck,
Woodz may be the man to ask

first thing i would try would be try the standard jets, and needle heights, it should start ok, then jet it up a little at a time, if it doesn't check the choke working ok,check the timing's ok, if the timings retarted, they only start with loads of throttle, and run v hot, too advanced and they turn over slow or kick back, but will start n run lumpy

btw i never saw you waving m8, but thats coz i live in darlington grin.gif :tounge:

Looks like it's an intermittent spark at one of the plugs.
I've tried three different plugs now they seem ok at first then just stop working.
i can stand for 10 mins with my finger jammed on the starter button.
it tries then dies.
there's petrol pissing out everywhere out the carb, out the exhaust, fecking everywhere.
BUT dry out the plug and leave it to stand 20 mins or so and it kicks straight away but one pot is running cold one is running hot . big handful of throttle and it can go two ways it'll either rev up to about 6000 then settle down to a nice even tickover both cylinders firing nicely and running at normal temp. OR, it'll run lumpy as feck then die you have to keep the throttle open a touch just to keep it running, plenty of backfiring and chuffing through the carb.
I'm just about at my whits end with this now and i'm about ready for lobbing it in the nearest skip.
Hope this all makes sense, i can't begin to explain how frustrated i'm getting
with this now, i can see a ride not far away but just can't get it.
Any help. as always gratefuly recieved.

is the GS 400 points or electronic? coz points coils are different, there isn't any vaccum pipes off the carb on the side that runs bad? try swapping the wires and the coil leads over see if the fault goes to the other cylinder, if it does it prob a coil problem if not its pickup/points or carb
ima
it's electronic m8.
can't see it being carb due to amount of fuel washing through the engine.
i've had a plug out and rested it on the block one minute the spark looks good and fat jumping across the electrode, next it's not there or weak as sh!t.
NigeC
first thing to try is swap the coils to the op side see if that work...
is there an orange wire to each coil, does it go into a connector, 3 wire one? if it does check the contacts are tight n clean
the pickups, are they clean? make sure theres no filling on the pickup as they are magnetic and it doesn't take much to cause a problem, on the gsx550's the magnets inside crack i'm not sure if the gs ones are the same
ima
one of the pickups has signs of "rubbing" might that be it i'm at my fecking whits end here if i hear one more backfire i'll fecking scream i've already lost my best pliers in a fit of temper.

i think theres a thin magnet if you take the plastic bit off the backplate, they break up, you have to be really careful not to break them putting them back together, will the 250 ones not fit?
i know how you feel, my honda nearly ended up with some big holes! leave it and walk away for a few days thats what i did, and it helped! fecked on for hours trying to get the engine unstuck, left it and came back it took 20mins ffs lol
ima
ok m8 will do.
I know it's electrical , I can feel it in my water. had an rd350 used to do the same thing and that was a plug going under compression.
The problem here is, i'm on my third set of plugs with no signs of a break.
i'll try switching coils over and see if the problem swaps pots.
the 250 pickups might fit.
you watch it'll be a plug cap cracked or something idea32.gif
now there's a thought.
