Since we know have a few folk, who can talk about electrics in foreign languages. wwww.gif I've a question for you.

My headlight is minging. Its a know problem on my viffer, which doesn't affect the later models. verysad.gif I've tried on of those Philips bulbs, which are supposed to be brighter and it is a bit better but still not very good. SO could I up the wattage of the bulbs or something and what would I need to take into account if I tried it.

I'm not sure what the current bulb is but double check. Can you also keep it simple for me. blush21.gif

Plant out in the spring and take them back in, in autumn according to alan titchmarsh.

you can get 55(maybe 65)w/100w's, Lusas do them, car rally shops keep em, but like TC sez it will put more strain on the rectifier/regulator, i think VFR's have a headlamp relay so the switch should be ok, for the amount of time highbeam is on i would risk it BUT i know how to replace the reg/rec with cheaper versions!
bikerdave
That's a fair shout guys. The reg/rectifiers on the VFR do have a bit of a reputation. sniffle.gif

Knowing sod all about electrics. blush21.gif

When you say they fit most bikes. What do I need to take into consideration when purchasing a new one.

For us folk who suffer from ignornace of electrics, are we better sticking to buying the recommended parts.
ima
The snag with recomended parts is sometimes they are sub standard.
Take the suzuki reg-rec unit, it's renowned for blowing up mainly due to vibration shaking the guts out of the thing. If i can lay my hands on one that's a bit better assembled or more robust then i will.

There is a firm called Electrex based in Stoke Row at Henley on Thames who specialise in making aftermarket regulator/rectifyers for just about every bike on the market.

They cost about a quarter of an OE part are much heavier duty with better cooling.

How do I know?  His place was on the opposite side of the yard to where my old business was located wwww.gif

Any contact info for them TC.

Don't know about the VFR but some wiring looms not designed to take the extra load/current, check wiring circuits carefully.
bikerdave
Thankee kindly sir. I shall check them out buttrock.gif

the superdream reg/rec mount the same way as most, (yamaha's can be a pain, they have likkle skinny ones mounted on footrest plates or towards the rear) most are three phase, a live and an earth, some have an ignition live, suzukis have one phase going thro the light switch, so they charge less with the lights off, which has a lot to do with the reg's burning out as well as the alternators, dumb idea! rolleyes.gif
