Starter motor won't spin without help.
The solenoids clicking away like hell when the starter buttons pressed.
Lights also stay bright.
I thought it was a duff battery at first now i'm thinking dirty com? dodgy wire?
whaddya think???

first thing to try is, short the two 10 mm nuts out on the sol.. it should spin over, if it doesn't check the earth connection, it should be on the engine if possible, you won't believe the amount of bikes i've come across that won't get a good earth thro the frame!, if the soloniod's clicking like crazy check the frame earth, for the wiring loom is it earthed on the back plate where the rectifer is? some are rubber mounted

if it doesn't spin, check the insulator on the nut where the soloniod lead goes on the starter, make sure its not cracked, a sure sign is a dead short when you brdge the solonoid
if you check the brushes/com mark the casings on the starter so they line up when it goes back together, some spin the wrong way if you get it wrong, i know a guy who spent £500 on a kawasaki coz of that

I've had a solenoid 'clicking like hell' that was caused by a flat battery.

When the solenoid connects, the current draw is suddenly greatly increased by the load imposed by the starter motor. This drags the battery voltage down, which causes the solenoid to give up and drop out, which releases the motor from the battery, so the voltage rises again, and the whole cycle repeats ad-nauseum.

Until you release the button... smile1.gif

I was thinking flat battery at first hilts, so i've got hold of a set of jump leads and run them straight off the cage.
solenoid still clicking like mad plus the lights are bright which generaly rules out effed battery, if the battery was flat then the surge across the solenoid makes the lights dim.

I've got two good earths both taken from the battery, one to the frame, one to the engine.
If I spin the engine with a socket wrench whilst pushing the starter switch.
sometimes it'll spin briskly on the starter sometimes it won't.

I'm begining to think dodgy live to the motor or dirty com/brushes knackered.

if it's the brushes i'll solder in a new set, if it's the com then under cutting a skimming both a pain in the arris either way up

Failing that it might be starter bearings being a bit tight. idea32.gif

seems a bit odd the solenoid is clicking like mad, does it have a cut out switch? so it won't start in gear, or side stand switch, if the neutral light isn't working it could cause a problem, earth it on anything and see if it helps.. the gs engine doesn't have a gear indicator thingy for a which gear ur in display?

try a lead direct off the battery to the connection on the starter,, it should fly over

a starter with a dead short would make the soloniod click but the lights would flash with it

Got it sorted, split the stator and whipped out the rotor, the com was covered in sh!te and pitted in places, quick polish with wet and dry and it's whirling like dervish now.
