OK, the weather is still OK at the moment (in fact, I went out & about today and had a really good ride). However, winter approaches and I've got no shame in admitting that I have every intention of being a fair-weather rider! So, what do you recommend doing to the bike for winter storage, while I get back into my car with it's nice big heater? grin.gif

So far I figure that a good clean/wax is a good start, wiping WD40 on most things metal, cleaning the chain and brushing plenty of lube into it are all a good start. Any other tips?

Tyres I wonder about. I don't like the idea of them developing flat spots. I thought about putting the pressures high & just rolling the bike back & forth once in a while. Any other suggestions?

Once I wheel it out again in the spring, I'd basically be looking at changing the fluids (brakes, coolant & oil) checking tyres & that the suspension hasn't gone 'orrible. Again, any other tips?

I have never done it, but what I have heard are good tihings to do:

Drain the fuel tank, and then run the bike to empty the fuel from carbs/fuel pipes. Fuel goes off so you dont want it gumming everything up. Once you have done that put a dash of engine oil in the tank and swirl it around to prevent rust.

Ideally put it on stands (front & rear paddock stands, or front + centre stand) to lift the tyres up. You also want it level rather than on the side stand so its not stressing one fork seal more than the other.

Get hold of an optimiser/trickle charger type charger and leave it plugged in, allowing the battery to drain completely can kill it.

Good wash and wax and allow it to dry and then spray everything metal with a good coat of WD40/ACF50/FS635 type stuff.

Take the battery off and remember to give it regular refresher charges. (unless you MUST leave it on the bike to keep the electronics going) I would suggest also jacking the bike up on blocks so the wheel are clear of the ground.
(Standing for months with weight on can fubar the wheel bearings, which is why spinning the wheels every so often is a plan).

i never done it... but never owned a bike a whole yr... they normally get stolen before the summer..

i think i heard something about turning the tires so they dont sometihng or other.

give the brakes a good clean before you store it
never leave a battery sat on the floor
if you do use the bike after the first lot of salts been down, clean exposed connector plugs and give em a dose of WD40 etc

Not that I do, but is there a battery care reason for not doing so?

maybe i should of elaborated more wink1.gif ..
concrete or paved floor, the concentrated cold spot warps and distorts the cells
leaving them on carpet isn't a good idea specially while charging, the gases from batteries combined with acids effects on carpets isn't good
store off the floor on wood on a shelf below chest level
never look directly down on a charging battery.. i've seen some nasty injures over the years caused by batteries exploding

Arc welding in a room where a dozen truck batteries are being charged isn't much of a plan either. ooh2.gif
