Full Version: Too many bloody wires...

OK, who can tell me how the feck you wire a 5 way relay then? I think I was distracted by the loom at some point into thinking that it would just plug in. For a relay to work you have to supply a "separate" power to one of the lugs do you not?

How the feck to I tell which is the right one then? There's only one "gap" on the existing relays (as wired originally in the fairing I suppost) so do I "take a chance" that that's the one? Don't want to start buggering fuses at this late stage?

Help, m'learned articles eyebrow.gif

whats the relay for? is it a jap one or from a car DIY place? any numbers? 30, 87, 87b, 86, 85 on a universal type one, japs are normally single number 1 to 5 sometimes they have a little picture on em

if its a universal one
85 earth
86switch
30 battery +
87 normally closed(it'll be live till the relay is switched)
87b normally open(live when relay is switched on)

Woodz, thanks matey. It's a universal one actually (well, two of them in fact) and I simply got annoyed and took one to bits to work out the inner machinations... your post would have saved me the trouble though!

T'is working. Now, I have another question for you m'learned friend... how do we work out what currency (I can't believe this is what I studied all those years ago blush21.gif because I can't remember) the lights are drawing... curious about the standard loom coping with the new cibie twins up from a single you see.

V=IR2 or some such... but I can't recall the Power version (i.e. 150 watts @ 12v draws what current then?)

bowdown.gif to anyone who can enlighten me without referring to a text book (which will be my next step grin.gif )

150 W / 12 V = 12.5 amps

blush21.gif i couldn't remember either, its bin a long time since i had to work it out!

run a fresh wire direct from the battery, i would, if your worried about the relay getting wet....put it in a balloon, with one of those little silicon bags that come in packing idea32.gif

Cheers Woodz, that's what it was wwww.gif

So, then... the next question. I'm up in mission control right now but think that the bike's got separate fused feeds for Hi and Lo beam... 15a and 10a fuses if I remember rightly. So if I've got 2 150 watt main beams then I'm pulling 25 amps blush21.gif which means what exactly?

Do I take the feed from the fuse box? If so, uprate the fuses I guess? Is 25a too much... are they really 150 watt main beams or am I dreaming again wwww.gif

Or is it best to take a big chunky fat wire direct from the battery and stick and in-line fuse in that?

Your thoughts? bowdown.gif

what i would do is..
if your running two headlamps, use a relay for each light, use a direct fused feeds from the battery (use blade type fuse holders. not glass type fuses) to the connection "30"
if you are running something 12amp the fuse should be about 20 to 25, a 25 amp fuse constant amp flow is about 15amp

Thanks Woodz again... my bulbs are actually petunias, sorry wrong forum. My bulbs are actually 60/55 so drawing a max. of 10 amps in theory although I put a meter on it to check.

I'm gonna "bodge it" for the next month or so until it needs a service and MOT at which point I shall have to take the belly pan off to save money. With new MOT on it I shall then remove the fairing and fit a new loom into it so that I can simply plug and un-plug.

At the moment it looks like an Italian chef has got a little excited with the spaghetti..
