white roads

1. The road that used to be the A34 going north from Whichurch Hants - twists and turns and then dives into the "new" A34 dual cabbage for a junction and then off again, meeting the new road again at the TotHill services junction/ Newtown straight - I rode this lovely wooded twisty road on a Saturday afternoon and didnt see another soul (and it wasnt world cup week either) would have been good to have company of other bikes.

2. Road that used to be the A303 from the A343 junction to the "new" A303 has a superb S under the new road that I might one day be able to go fast on, I rarely see any other vehicle on this one either.

I fully intend looking for more

The B7076/B7078 which runs pretty much from Gretna all the way to Glasgow. Best B road you will find as it used to be the A74 before the built the A74M/M74 which pretty much runs alongside it. All the heavy traffic uses the new road leaving those that know to play on the nice B road. Need to be careful though because they put the cameras on the bridges over the new road and the police cars often patrol the old road instead.

B2089 from Rye to Cripps corner is a lovely raod (some of it a 40 limit) but still great...then cross country to the B2096 from Battle to Heathfield...all demanding but beatiful B roads with good surface and in some places stunning views beer.gif

B1200 I think it is from Mablethorpe to Louth.
Scary stuff, basically a farm track. Good surface (smooth granite type stuff), but ditches on either side full of standing water, sharp bends with no warning..

Awesome in the early hours in that sort of half-light! beer.gif

I rode to the midlands yesterday, and the road between Grantham and Donnington (not the race circuit) was completely empty. Wow, what a blast.

The back roads from Biddulph to Leek are a good way to start a Peak District circular run of any kind as that part is pretty quiet apart from farm traffic. I get to ride along a high ridge with open views on either side (30 miles plus to the west), then down into Biddulph for a few hundred yards before scooting out across the back roads. The Leek to Buxton road is a real belter if you can hit it when it's quiet (usually only in the middle of the week if you're off work).

Mind you, as so many pensioners have cars these days you rarely find any nice road in Cheshire or thereabouts that's not covered in Micras, Fiestas, Corollas - the usual suspects. rolleyes.gif

Practically anywhere in Brittany.

Not quite at that stage here in Cornwall yet for another month. (All the geriatrics come down in September after the miniature terrorists have gone back to school).

Some nice twisties around Salisbury Plain that are normally quite quiet (and i've only had to stop at a tank crossing once......)

Same in Dorset.

But yesterday I went to a spot on the A36 a few miles south of Salisbury to phot a landmark for the RBR, and the main roads were so busy I took to the country lanes and hardly saw another vehicle - the oldies don't generally like to get off the main roads!

There's a few round my way (finchley) that are luvverly, but only if you do them at 2am.

One in particular has lots of gorgeous sweepers that run past lakes (on one side) and mansions (on the other).

In fact, I'd recommend London roads at stupid hours of the day (or rather night).

Got quite a lot of good raods 'round here, trouble is, they're too busy for the most part.

Did find an excellant 'unlisted' road the other day. Only about 10 miles in length, but great surface & VERY twisty.

As many of you have found, once a main road is replaced or bypassed, the former main road becomes empty and more fun. When the World Cup was on virtually every road became empty buttrock.gif

I always liked the a361 from J10 up to Southam then the 423?(I think) to banbury, 4 very nice, very tight corners to play on and a nice balst back...

Hehe, it's a good job I know where you mean. 'Cause you managed to get it completely mixed up lbhh.gif

And yes, it's one of my favourite triangular rides. I try not to do it too often, so's it doesn't get too samey.

The route is; J11 (M40), A361 to Daventry, TL on to the A425 to Southam, TL again onto the A423 back to Banbury.

NB the 423 figured recently with a pair of right twonks (in an Evo & on a R1 (I think)), thinking they were English variants of the Ghost Rider w_nker.gif
