Full Version: filtering and overtaking

How often do you do it?  I am a confessed serial filterer and like to overtake at every opportunity. In my defence, I believe that looking for overtakes ( wether the overtake is actually executed or not) force me to look further and think more ahead so cant be bad.  Filtering is a joy in my opinion and i take the opportuniy to filter as much as poss.  I dont care if i dont make all that much progress it just pleases me to do it.  But never risky filtering. How about you.

"The reason I filter through traffic is because I can. I put up with ice, sleet, snow, rain and arrisholes in cars because I can filter through traffic. If you have a problem with people using a gap you've left then don't leave the damn gap in the first place. Either that or get yourself a bike but please don't sit in your car being all righteous at me because I passed you and you were queueing. You fecking idiot."

Nope, never do it... heheh
womble
After being a courier for 18 yrs i find it very very hard not to filter.

If i want to sit in traffic i will go out in my van or on the trike.
Ian
ditto to what Zombie said.  As often as it is in my opinion safe to do so.

the day i stop filtering/overtaking will be when i'm in the box (although i shall request the hearris at least has a go-just for appearances sake)

when your as impatient as me filtering and overtaking(safely) is a way of life, why take 10 mins when you can take 5.
lifes too short to spend it in traffic jams.
even when im in the car, if im turning left at a roundabout and theres a line of traffic in the left hand side waiting to go left and straight on, ill indicate to go right, pull into the right hand lane, go 270 degrees round the round about and pull off at my junction idea32.gif .
if you memorise the car you were behind when you pull into the right hand lane, check its progress as you take your turn off and youd be suprised at how many spaces you can jump!
it amuses me to see people at a standstill(especially the metro centre)when theres an empty right hand lane.
but please dont tell everyone, because the more people who pull this little scam, the more people ill find in the right hand lane, when i come to do it talktohand.gif

Filtering - surely just 'making progress'?
Yup - I do too, but need to remember when I've got the expanded panniers on!

The day I start filtering, is the day I'll say, 'Where the fook did all these cars come from'.  :eyebrow:

Alright, occasionally, if I ever run into traffic but roads just aren't busy enough around here. to do it on a regular basis. Even my trip to work is outside rush hour.  (blush21.gif Well its rush hour for us).

There is a certain pleasure to be gained from filtering though, I think its seeing the poor souls stuck in their cages, while I ride past laughing..   cool2.gif
Nate
Oh filtering has to be a must... but it does get me all jitterey when some twot in a car takes offense...

Prefer overtaking... Guess cos in cornwall there are more fun roads (and at this time of year, dithering tourists).

Just love the performance of my bike and the jealous look of the driver in the mirrors... Laff  :laughcont:

Nate

P.S. New to this group.... looks really good

Pleased to make your acquaintance Nate.

I was abused the other day by some old hag who asked why i felt i had to get to the front of every queue.
ZOMB!E
i just gazed at her and said   'I ride a motorcycle love.................I dont   do queues'.
ZOMB!E
i should add really that i would never knowingly do something totally fecking stupid just to get passed someone.  And i would not risk my life for a filter!
bikerdave
Welcome Nate.  :buttrock:

my best filter ever, 3˝ miles past a feck off big queue on the A64 reason for said queue?
A hill, go figure, i'd have been  stuck in that bugger for hours.
zipped past in about 15 mins, Oh yeah i'll filter alright but only when it's safe to do so.
However, anyone had a bad experience through filtering?
worst thing that ever happened to me was prolly the ciggy flicked out of the window that landed inside my helmet.

so, how the feck do you know when your times up?
soon for me-given my bad habit of "protecting" my students by placeing myself twixt them & some stupid twonk in a car who wont give way, drives too close, etc etc etc.
ZOMB!E
TC- the precidents you mention are of cars emerging from junctions.  Whilst bikers could argue all day about the responsibillity of the emerging driver it doesnt alter the truth of what you say.
Mally
I filter daily on the way 2 work and back home unless taking a detour cos of that pesky Sun.   As for doin it safely I believe yes, whether legally saint2.gif hmmmmmm. Lets just say u learn summat evryday when out with the   .
Do i enjoy it - yep, miles of smiles.
ZOMB!E
i am suitbly chastised but i never meant to suggest filtering is a lightly taken decision. do it easy and do it with a thought for your legal liabillity and safety at all times.
ima
So where is the best place to be when filtering?
lets say duel carriage way two lanes of stationary traffic.
it would seem you have three possibilites.
left lane inside all the traffic, through the centre, or right lane outside all the traffic.

left lane seems to be the safest option traffic only on one side,
but then again you have the problem of pedestrians if in town and could this be construed as an under take, there's also the problem of car doors being opened on you.

centre lane also a dodgy area traffic on both sides i've found you have to very wary of gaps appearing in traffic and drivers scooting across lanes, then there's the problem of mirrors especially from cars towing caravans.
doors opening again, i've had this happen to me, where some bod decides to jump out for a better look, things being thrown out of car windows, fags, coca cola cans etc.

ok right lane then you get the same problems as above plus the added bonus of folks turning right where you have the potential to get stuck in the lane and have to go round some god awful one way system or stay where you are and lose any advantage the filter was supposed to give you in the first place.

The watch words for filtering would seem to be forward observation and care, this seems at first like an obvious thing to say but i've been surprised at some of the things i've seen whilst filtering from bikers and drivers alike.

worst thing that ever happened to me was prolly the ciggy flicked out of the window that landed inside my helmet.

I hit a london cab in kensington  i was going up the outside & he done a u turn.. twisted my back smashed the fairing on my bike, (& sob my stereo stopped working).

Also had a  coke tin hit me in the face breaking my nose the can was full why it was thrown out the window i have not a clue.

Yeah I know i never have a clue.

but i have survived where many have not so SOMEONE is on my side !!

cool2.gif hi nate

Filtering this morning and a couple walked through the cars in front right in front of my path totally oblivious to myself. Hadn't realised I had lost so much weight. Stopped within 2 foot of the lass and she just waited for the car in the opposite direction to pass b4 continuing across the rd. Would hav shouted at her but continuing my own observation skills at her figure :p . Cheers Mally

my longest filter was from Swindon to the severn bridge on the M4 sniffle.gif peein down with rain, and i was visiting in Newport - - - on the same day that the football final (or semi final) thingy was on in Cardiff, 30 - 40 mph all the way :tounge: -
but faster than the cages smile1.gif

oh and between lanes two and three - always seems safest to me , in this country at least.
On a dual cabbageway it has to be between the two lanes, inside lane one and you're at risk at every junction and near the reserve there's no where else to go, just a case of keeping eyes well peeled.

err and Hi all, think this may be my first post

Just a shame he is wrong about the legality aspect!

which part is he wrong about TC?
the legality as a whole or just parts of it?

The absolute offence of nearside overtake was removed from the statute books over 25 years ago, and by and large it is fully acceptable providing a few basic rules are observed, pretty much the same as a conventional overtake.

Well, I for one didn't know that... buttrock.gif
