I know this is probably a daft question but I said I'd ask.

A non biking friend,Loris, is interested in getting a Harley engined trike and wants to know if she'd still be able to join the Harley Owners club and if you can drive a trike on a car license.
Does anyone know any trike builders that are ok?
Loris saw a Harley trike on e bay for £12000 and I told her to look into getting one built for her as that seems really steep to me ooh2.gif

Yep...you can ride a trike on a car license
12000 sounds a bit much but in saying that ive heard of them costing in excess of 30k

Absolutly you can join the HDRCGB with an HD trike (Harley Davidson Riders Club GB)
this is NOT the factory Owners club it is the Riders Club - small but significant emphasis on the name there!.. .Dont know if HOG *the factory club* will welcome her ... Does she have a platinum AMEX card - that might make more of an impression?

£12 k for a good HD trike is not beyond the realms of reasonable (Ouch, but realistic) - building a good one from scratch could cost her a lot more by the time donor bike and the work involved is added up.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I always thought you could only drive a car engined trike on a car licence? Like I said I may be wrong but as she is going for a bike engine trike it would be well worth ringing the DVLA to check this out before spending £12k on a trike she cant ride!

it changed when they brought in the new rulings so ironically now unless you ask for the b1 catagory on your licence when applying for a provision if you're going bike only licence, then you don't get it and as such can't ride a trike as its not included on your bike licence when you pass your test rolleyes.gif daft huh cos you get it automatically if you get your provisional for a car and its automatically updated when you pass your driving test rolleyes.gif

you can ride any kind of trike on a full car license!
it is more difficult with bike license
(I know, very weird! go figure!)

does seem bizarre, as Ian found out, cos we went out + bought a bike engined trike, he can ride it on his full car license (like me) and even tho he has no knowledge of bikes, he can hop straight on and ride it! He found it quite difficult, because of the gearing and clutch/accelerator and was baffled at the thought that someone can just buy one and ride it!

As for decent trike builders, where abouts in the country are they? If you want I can stick up a post on 100% (lot more knowledge of trikes on there) or reccomend that they join that forum (aswell as this one of course!)

Does it have to be a harley?

Trikes aren't cheap! Harley's aren't cheap! Unfortunately that means she's going to pay out quite a bit for a harley trike, and to me £12K may not be that far out!

BSH and 100% biker magazines I would recommend aswell as they have good classifieds, including quite a few trikes, trike builders and numbers for trike insurance (although they all end up as the same company! laughcont.gif )

Bruce who triked my bike is very well thought of locally...

BB Customs

He will trike your own bike or one that he's got in stock - don't spose he has too many Harleys just sitting around waiting tho - would be too much capital tied up, as others said, they're expensive!
