Full Version: Choosing the roads

Sh*t! And I mean excrement! I've had to scratch a couple of really nice back roads off my local loop because on some days they are just piled high with the stuff depending on what the farmer is doing that day. I get zero learning experience when I'm fixating on the slimy pig poo covering half the road 30 feet in front of me when I should be looking down the road or around the corner.

Just shows you that choosing bad roads when you're getting back into biking is a stupid idea and a good way to chuck the benefit from a ride-out down the toilet. Besides, if you come off onto a mixture of pig poo and pig urine, the only way to get the smell of it out of your leathers would be to set fire to them. Gawd, that stuff mings! sick.gif

yeah this annoys me. I used to work on a farm, and we couldnt help the mess left behind by the tractor wheels coming in from muddy fields, or the mess the cows left when moving from field to field, and like wise the sheep, but we used to clean up the road the best we could and put out plenty of warning signs, we had a living to make, all farmers do, but for crying out loud is it neccessary to leave great clods of earth and sh!te for other road users to fall foul of????? Get some warning signs made up at least farmer bloody jones!!!!!

Well said, Sparks. One of the local farmers from time to time makes a right old mess of a busy little bit of road connecting the A50 and A34 but he always puts out a home-made "mud on road" sign. Top bloke. thumbsup2.gif Pity more aren't as thoughtful.

Only once have i see a home made sign at a farm..and well done to him....but i cant help feeling that were being a bit selfish here...we know where riding in a farm/animal work area...so shouldnt we expect mud and animal droppings to be on the road?..and ride accordingly to the road conditions at all times?...ok so maybe the farmer should clean..or at least hose down the road...but who's to say that you havent arrived on that stretch of road before he's had a chance to do that?

Naaa…

don't think so chilli…example..me!

How the hell do I know if there's a farm or is there going to be mud around the next corner?
Sometimes when I get out on the bike I don't even know where I'm heading...

There is a lovely "A" road just outside the town I live in, its twisty, but its a major road, there are residential areas, in between the last 2 houses on the residential area (right opposite residential houses) is a dirty muddy driveway,at the end of this dirt driveway is a farm, with outbuildings where the farm machinery is kept. This farmer brings his tractors out of the sh!tty floored "sheds", tread full of mud from these "unfloored" sheds, through a yard, through a crap ridden sub yard and up a muddy drive, onto the road, and a few hundred yards down the road to where the gate to his first field is. I know the farm is there, people living in the area know the farm is there, unfortunately a 47 year old Asian man a few weeks ago, out riding his black R6 with his friends, were not local, they did not know the farm was there. There are no signs, no indication that a farm is hidden tucked away, the problems begin when he comes out of his field with his muddy tractor and plough, big hedges either side as they hit the NSL, they have passed his almost hidden driveway, surely farms are "out in the countryside", oh no, the entrance to the first field is just round a blind bend, bike leant over, oh sh!t theres mud! Too late front wheel loses grip. BANG. But........I know its there.....do you?

Also chili, it takes nothing really does it? A bit of card with big writing on it, and its hazourdous to other road users too, not just bikers, like barley, even for cars, its like trying to drive on a bed of ball bearings.....it costs nothing to put up a sign, it may cost life if they dont.....

Good point ......but itsnt that the point to riding on roads safely......if you cant see round a blind bend.....then you hold back..and you know that as well as i do..
every road has clues of somesort to show whats going on.....so the more we get the oh ffs out of our heads when riding, and thinking how dare they spoil our fun....
then the safer we'll all be

Im not disagreeing with you....what im saying is in rural areas we should be a bit more careful....we have to be just as responsable for the dangers we put ourselfs in too

I know it costs nothing to put up a sign, thats why i said i had only ever seen one

An inexperienced rider may not have the best road reading skills chili, and like I said, it takes 2 minutes doesnt it? The point you seem to miss is we all have a right to be on the road, we all have a responsibilty to other road users, that means farmers who exercise their right to use the road, have as much responsibility towards their fellow road users as their fellow road users have to them....
Billy M
nope...your wrong....im not missing any point, and if you read this back without adding any and, if's or but's ...you'll find that in the main im AGREEING with most of whats been said ...except for JP's bit about him not reading the road

Sorry, I thought you were trying to say we shouldnt complain about farmers disregard for other road users safety.

Nope i was trying to get at our...and when i say our i mean bikers in general..
Attitudes when riding......we're just as responsable for putting ourselfs in danger as is the sloppy farmer/worker......we can add as many if, buts, or maybe's into any senario that we like to throw up...but the thing is...and i stand by this....every road tells a story and all the signs are there for all to see.....but nothing tells you to slow up like a blind bend....

so yes by all means ...complain about the messy roads.....complain about the unmarked farm exits/entrances....ffs complain about everything that isnt right...
but dont just see it as all someone elses fault...cos we all play a part in it.

Hey cool it mate, was just trying to make a point, having been on both sides of the fence I was basing that point on my experience. I didnt mean to offend you! Oo1.gif

There are 2 parts for this.

The farmers are obliged to make good any damage or mess on the public roads but, from an observation link, if you see a warning sign for tractors or farm animals its reasonable to assume they may be the primary hazard but the mud & sh*t is the secondary hazard
