came up to a mini roundabout today and a lady going ahead gave me the palm up signal!

i was astonished, couldnt believe anyone still used or even knew that signal. good on you lady i thought.

Yeah thats true........i wouldnt have recognised a hand signal...though there still in the highwaycode.....just wondering if there ever used in the riding/driving test anymore

Mates who ride classic bikes have no choice, no indicators fitted. Friends old Ariel, right hand throttle, front brake, hand gearchange, and then he has to give hand signals as well!

I am embarrassed to say I only ever use 2 hand signals. One involves 1 finger and the other 2 fingers. Allow me to demonstrate.

erm..... dont look now nick but i think the hand with 2 fingers has a faulty finger. Only seeing 1 finger on each hand....

It indicates an intention to go straight on.
I saw it used when communicating with both a cop directing traffic and a hitch-hiker, of all things.

May I ask a question? When you say palm up, do you mean facing forward, like a point duty policeman's stop signal? At first I thought you meant as though you're testing for rain and couldn't think of any meaning for that.

If the former, I'm still guilty of using it as, like Teguvas's friend, I too ride a bike with "right hand throttle, front brake, hand gearchange, and then ( I have ) to give hand signals as well". I also use the 'I am shaking the ash off my ciggy' and when the outfit is ready, I'll also do the 'I am drying my nail varnish'.

The gesticulator makes a motion as if falttening wallpaper with teh heel of the hand, which is tapped several times on the top front corner of the dashboard.

I went for an assessment ride with an advanced rider school the end of last summer, and the observer was impressed with me using hand signals - didn't think anyone did them anymore . . .
I had to front up to him and admit that I was doing them because my trumpet had shaken my indicators to bits though
