Full Version: Handicaps required in MotoGP?

Whatcha reckon? 'Orses have weights strapped to 'em to make things fair.

Pedrosa weighs about as much as a packet of Walkers crisps. OK, he has a strength
disadvantage so what I'm not saying is "all bike/rider combos must weigh exactly the
same".

However, he has such a massive advantage on the straights/barrelling out of corners
that, IMO, something needs to be done about it, else the future of MotoGP is likely to be
a field of 5' 0" jockeys screaming about.
Finn
Surely this only becomes relevent if he starts winning ?

(Dont watch the GP but going by the other thread he isnt yet)

Most motoGP riders are the size of jockeys nowadays, and superbikes seem to be shrinking too. But his weight advantage (am I right in thinking it's around 1.5-2 stone?) is huge.

They could intruduce an F1 style combined bike & rider minimum weight rule, but I think if mini-me is mixing it with guys who are physically stronger then fair play to him.

I know they say his tires let him down last weekend because the compound was too soft, but would he have been in second place for that time if his rear tires were harder? I doubt it, anyone can put on soft tires and look good for 10 laps.

Wasn't there a big hoo-ha last year in the 250s when another rider spat the dummy about Dani being tiny and having a weight advantage? I think the general consensus of opinion in the paddock was "feck off, it's not his problem that he's wee". When you consider he couldn't even ride a bike until he got his 125 sponsor I think he's doing pretty well compared to all the others who've been riding their entire lives. Some people are just gifted. eyebrow.gif grin.gif

Seriously though (oh gods here we go rolleyes.gif laughcont.gif ), I think it would be unfair to the smaller riders to introduce a ballast rule. You can adjust suspension setups, tyre, etc. in bike racing to suit the rider or a particular circuit. Horse racing is pretty inflexible with things like that! (and if I'm wrong then there's some REALLY mucky jobs out there) lbhh.gif Also simply because a rider is smaller and lighter doesn't mean they will be any better around the track than someone larger. Look at the differences between Lavilla and Kiyonari for example, set pretty much the same lap times last year but there's a huge difference in physical stature. Does Kiyo do such a good job because he's lighter or is Lavilla unfairly disadvantaged because he's bigger? Surely it wouldn't be fair to punish a rider for making up in weight what they lack in skill?

(NB. I'm not saying Kiyo is unskilled, that came out a bit muddled there, you know what I mean!) wwww.gif

Woooooooooooooow, don't blame me for this. I get enough sh!t for the stuff I do post, don't need anyone else's thank you very much. lbhh.gif

Pedrosa is tiny even in rider standards but I think he is too small. He can't touch both feet on the ground for gods sake. What he gains in weight on the straight is taken away by the fact that he can't get on the gas as early as a heavier rider on the exit because he will just be lighting it up all the time, loose traction and kill the rubber. I also think he is struggling with fitness to last a race at full pace due to being a weed. So you don't need a handicap system, it is already in place.

As for putting Rossi at the back of the grid, do you really think that would stop him. Front to back of grid is what ??? 100 yards. He would be 4th or 5th by the end of the second lap and then just pick them off 1 by 1. He might not win as many races but he would still be the most consistent and win the championship. bowdown.gif

So are you saying that because he cant put both feet flat on the ground then he cant ride a bike?....what the ooh2.gif lbhh.gif
and does that put me in the same position then cos i cant place both feet flat on the ground when sitting on my bike......are you hightest? lbhh.gif
If what you say is true and he cant get on the gas as quick because of his weight....then how come he has won a GP race and has had at least 2 other podiums?

Time will tell if your right or wrong about pedrosa.........................personaly i think your way off the mark mate

The getting on the gas early part is fact not supposition.

I am not heightest or tiniest or any other est. I thought we were discussing the merits of Pedrosa and Rossi and I am only stating my point of view that I THINK he is too small. I don't think he is a crap rider or a bad person, just too small.

Go and pick on someone your own size shorty. lbhh.gif
