Full Version: Tank range?

When magazines state bikes' ranges, do they include the reserve? Also, do you guys ever use the reserve, or ride, pretending it isn't there and have it just for emergencies?
Billy M
Thats a good point mate...and to be honest i dont know the answer...but wont the tank range be different for each rider depending how the bike is ridden?

good point about rider, am sure there must be some average though ....

Mines a shed an takes £15 to fill an that gets me 300miles without reserve, personally I don't use the reserve I fill up before it gets to that stage blush21.gif

Mine has a reserve position, but no prime. THe last (and only) time I ran it out I found I didn't have enough battery strength to pump through the remaining fuel.

I just leave it on reserve and plan to stop after its done 130 miles, knowing it'll do (I think) around 175 before running out. The fuel guage on mine is a joke, it shows full until there's 12 litres left, and then shoots down to empty as she drinks the next 4 litres.

If the quoted capacity is correct at 21 litres on mine I'd guess that includes reserve. But I'm guessing.

300mile?! very impressive grin.gif

Ruby's GPZ does around 200miles, my FZR was around 165 to reserve, we try and fill em before they hit reserve.. reserve is handy but you can garantee the bike will pick a dumb arris place to go onto it! overtaking or roundabouts normally lol
Pete247
100miles and my fuel light is making me sweat! lol.

£12 to fill up.

It all depend on the bike and how you ride it, take it easy and you ll go further, take it for a speedy ride, and you ll do much less...
Personally, I always go to the reserve, as soon as the reserve light come up, then I go for a drink at the petrolstation for titine wink1.gif

Probably the reason why you don t get a bike range..I think
afroR6
On the R series bikes, there is an automatic reserve...The fuel light comes on and the bike's digital dash changes to a fuel trip count mode to show how many miles you have travelled on the reserve.

It's quite handy....There's about 20 - 25 miles max of reserve.

My bike will do about 140 miles to an empty tank if ridden moderately and only 110 to 120 if ridden hard....I once only managed 70 miles out of the tank blush21.gif

My blade will do about 110 miles on a tank full, and I know I can get 20 miles out of reserve (with light on) because I've done it while trying to find a garage miles from anywhere.

Its useful to know that reserve range, but it was nerve-racking to find it out the first time and I don't recommend it. Use your trip meter and fill up when garage comes into view before the light comes on.

Tell me about it...I had a real fright when I went to see my mate in Worcester and was on the main A road that leads into town, at about 3am, literally pitch black, noone about and the bike stalling slightly and running slowly because there's not enough fuel.

I was praying bowdown.gif

I got 150ish miles till the reserve yesterday, however, I was testing out the bike a bit *ahem* so that wouldn't have helped it.

I miss my SR125's range, 120miles for £6!

Ah life is never easy when you become complete pete
incompletepete
Nah, I'll be complete when I have a bike that's as comfy as a BMW 650GS, as fast as an R1, as much fun as a KTM Super Duke with the fuel consumption of an SR125 but only costs £100!
Michael
I'd like one of them too pete. smile1.gif

Got 250mi out of my Fazer one lovely motorway ride. Usually from my commute to work across the city is more like 160 miles.

I let her hit reserve these days - that's a good 1/7 of the tank. no actual "switch". light comes on, know I have 3 litres left.
trinoo
I always let it go to reserve as I only have the light as well. Yesterday I was at Ace cafe and my fuel light went on and I rode all the way back to the city and filled up and could only fit 15l in so it means I still had 3 litres left so I think my 4 litre reserve will take me quite far away..
Mike
Don't have a reserve as I have a fuel guage. The bike also has a fancy trip computer that tells me how many miles I have left based on average MPG cool2.gif . So about 205 miles when being sensible and a lot less the rest of the time, top toy!
Elvendra
I am lucky to get 110 miles out of my Hornet. I always let it go to reserve as it motivates me to get petrol. I just hate getting it for some reason.
Teguvas
Bonne does 125 on main, 150 with reserve, generally fill at around 100.

NTV is not a race styled bike, so can't be compaired to either the GPZ or FZR, its the predecessor to the dullsville wink1.gif has a huge petrol tank as its a 1988 bike, well before they started changing tank stylings to asthetic, theres a reason the couriers use them..... but for me its bloody economical for getting to college. Good to know its another + for riding a shed for me lol gawd help me when I can afford a new bike and it costs me £5 to get to the end of the road lbhh.gif

My Sprint RS has 4 litres left when the light comes on and I've done nearly 60 miles on that and still had nearly a litre left. I normally get around 180-190 until reserve. so maybe 240 till dry. Not bad for a big heavy bike with a topbox eh?
mads
dont have a reserve light or gauge so have to judge by eye! ooh2.gif

went to Fox's last Saturday and got 160 miles out of the tank with some fuel still remaining. think i could have got atleast another 40 miles out of it. Cost me £12 to fill up for the 160miles I used. Worked out to be about 56mpg.

and I though I was bad,,, as I used to keep all the receipts etc and see how much I spend ove rthe month...

yeap
There was a time when I did care,,,,

and it did about 38/40MPG in town,,

about 45mpg on the open road,,,,

Now it is simple,,,,, ( part of my Money therapy - don't count too much)

as well as having a Digital Fuel Gauge,, with bars segments, I have about 4L reserve..

but the last start blinking when down to 6.5L and the Pump icon when down to 4.5L,, I think,, and soon after got to turn the tap to reserve...

however the thought of the bike stalling half way a bend etc,,,makes me turn to reserve at the first traffic light....

and to a petrol station as soon as possible..

on everyday I hardly even fill up to the top,,,, about a £10 a go...

unless I am going far, so I fill up to the top...
bornagain
Between 180 and 215 miles to reserve (depending on how I am riding) and allegedly 35-40 miles from reserve (reserve is just the trip meter flashing with miles from when it started using the "reserve").

I'll need to have a blardy good look at mine then..(when all the bits are back together) mines an older shed (NTV600) and I'll get about 170 ish to reserve then another 20 / 30 till empty. Usually I refill at 160 and it takes about £15.

My LE Velo has a 1½ gallon tank and no reserve. I'm either going or I'm not. No warning, nothing. I get about 140 miles to the tankful and carry a 1½ litre fuel bottle to get me another 30miles if/when I run out.
