Full Version: Margin of error

I was out with the family at the weekend, in the cage that is,making our way along a narrow, snaking road that most folks in this area know well.

Dude on a CBR6 comes up behind us. Bloody close. Not much margin of error there thinks I, still I just carry on because I'm sure he'll be by in a moment.

Through the lights and there's a very short straight - sure enough, he's away. But - he keeps going past cars with a left-hander looming. This is a blind bend and traffic coming the other way has just descended a short hill, which gives them a nice fast swoop down onto the straight. In other words, nobody hangs about on this road, even though it's narrow, bendy and 'blind' with a lot of foliage along the way. Anyway, Dude is alongside the second car when round the bend comes another towards him. Sharp intakes of breath all round - but he makes it - just.

Round the bend he's overtaking again, this time up the hill towards a right-hander, and yet again, a car approaches suddenly round the bend, and fast, and Dude is nearly caught out again. But only nearly, and he's away. Over the hill there's plenty of straights and much better vision, and he's long gone.

Not much margin of error on the overtakes though was there?

I've seen a biker killed on this road in what looked like an overtaking incident. And I've seen others hospitalised. If you play it too close you risk misjudging the oncoming vehicle and if you clip it - goodnight Nurse ooh2.gif  :O .

So, guys and gals, think of your margins of error and arrive a few seconds later please.

Does anyone on here get a kick out of these risky overtaking manueuvres? :shifty:

I saw somebody do that in a cage at the weekend. He couldn't wait to overtake a car and caravan. Scared the shot out of me watching it. I thought I was about to witness a head-on collision, whether I liked it or not. Some folk seem to have a death wish.  :Oo:

Only the "thank christ for that... I'll plan a little more carefully next time" kick for me I'm afraid... closing speed can be a little disconcerting to say the least ooh2.gif

I am always amazed at how many bikes I follow overtake into a blind bend... maybe there's some immortals out there trying to teach us the path to righteousness... or not Oo1.gif

its not just them that  suffer the consequences of their stupid behaviour is it?
what they should be made to do is look at the collection of photos the local traffic dept have on file, it just might make the feckwits think twice.
i doubt it.................................................... but you never know

gets of soapbox n gets coat......................................................

I try and avoid dodgy overtakes wherever possible.
The trouble with the suzi is you have to get the thing "on the boil" as it were.
If i'm overtaking and have to hit the brakes or shut off the throttle for whatever reason and it drops out of the powerband then basically i'm fecked.
you'd have to drop it down a gear or two and get the thing revving again.
Hard to do when you've got a ton of whatever bearing down on you.
Personally i like to see whats coming before i commit. idea32.gif
