just been cleaning my daytona 600 today and to my horror found a 3 inch crack in the lower fairing, the bike was serviced by lings of ipswich less than 2 weeks ago and i must admit this is the first time ive cleaned the bike since ( probably done 150 miles since service ) now, there are 2 possible explanations.. one of the mechanics broke the fairing while doing the service or its a manufacturing fault as it appears to have cracked on the edge of the heat shield stuck to the inside of the fairing just by the side stand.
Ive phoned lings but as they are about to shut ill have to take it in on monday for a warranty repair..
dp.. reckon its safe to carry on using? or should i put some tape over it for now to stop it getting worse?

Ouch. There doesn't look to be any mounting points near the brake so I'd guess it's not down to overtightening when it was serviced.
Difficult call really mate, I hope it gets sorted under the warranty.

I'm no expert but I'd tape it up so that it'll help to prevent any flexing making the crack extend.
I've also noticed the plastic on my ST is fairly fragile down there, and am careful not to put too much pressure on it when cleaning it in case I crack it.
I hope the dealer gets it sorted for you.

the ONLY way to stop it spreading is to drill a small hole at the end of the crack.I'd let them see it 1st b4 you start drilling holes though EB.

See? That's what I love about thees forums. Make an ill-informed comment and someone who actually knows what they're talking about will be drawn out of the woodwork to put it right.

If theres is no impact damage and looking at the damage via the picture I would say there is in all probability a fitting error.
The person that fitted it MAY have fitted the front of the panel first and not noticed the rear was caught up behind the fitting lug and instead of unfastening the plastic he has pulled free the rear part and stressed fractured the centre of the panel as it is the most likely part to break or it could be the reverse fitting of the panel that did the damage.
Hard to prove but on the balance of probability it looke like the fitters fault to me?..
On second viewing my theory apppears to come true ?if you look at the broken or fractured part and follow to the end of the crack, the last 50mm? is broken UNDER the paint so my conclusion is that the rear of the panel WAS pulled outwards creating the crack thus allowing the paited bit not to be broken.

my thoughts exactly.... but its gonna be hard to prove that they did it. imgonna see what they say first. hpwever i will say it seems suspicious that i noticed it after they serviced it..
will let you know what happens tomorrow
ive also posted the same thing on the t595.net website as i know people from triumph often look at there forum. Another guy had a problem with a newdaytona sorted within a couple of days after his dealer gave him no joy

The way the crack is splayed a little, leads me to thinking that there is some tension on it.
Hope you get it sorted EB,

is that your oil drainage nut i see at the left of the foto, which if removed/replaced with a spanner and not a socket and extension, would have the fairing in the way?

it is dr gonzo! 5 star points to you sir!
hmmm. ...
if they have another silver one in the showroom im gonna ask if they can swap the faring panels over.. worth a try?

well took the bike in lunchtime today to lings and despite them having 2 silver daytona 600's in there showroom they refused to swap the fairing panel andhugger over. instead they have gaffer taped up the fairing..( looks very attractive on a new bike!) and ive got to wait while they process a warranty claim and then ive got to take ANOTHER afternoon off work and waste ANOTHER 50 miles worth of petrol when the parts come in.
it would have been so much easier for them to have swaped the parts over and i would have left a happy customer. i know they have to keep to the rules but surely seeing as ive bought 2 new triumph from them in the past they should have fallen over themselves to try and help me?
lets hope triumph can get there finger out and get the parts shipped to the dealer as quickly as possible.

DID THEY ACCEPT IT WAS THIER FAULT??
I dont realy blame them for not swopping over the panels as the colour match could differ, BUT you hopefully came out a winner so all is not lost then and you win a new panel

nope. they didnt admit tat they had done the damage. and said its more than likely to be either a design fault.. or a stress fracture... yeah right..
either way i shouldnt have to pay for a panel but its still cost me time and money for petrol

Try a letter or e-mail to triumph themselves and don't stop until you get a reply.
The problem with us english is we don't complain enough.
In the states you'd be talking lawsuits and god knows what else.
A case in point is the guy with the photgraphs-
He came back from holiday and the developers fecked up one of his films. A new film was offered but the guy refused stating that the new film would not actually have his snaps on it!!
He started court proceedings and the devlopers offered him an out of court settlement of 5 GRAND.
Bitch and moan eb, bitch and moan!!
Make sure you write your letter on coloured paper Yellow, pink, green it doesn't matter but it will get noticed i guarantee it..

apparently the guy who does the warranty claims is off on holiday and wont be back till the end of next week.
so i have been waiting for a new hugger for 3 weeks and ive been driving around on a new bike with a gaffer taped fairing for just over a week and my dealer has done nothing to help a valued customer.....
im most dissapointed with lings of ipswich and tonight im going to be writing to triumph to complain, .. and WHY.. do they not have a contact email address??

this is a copy of a fax ive just sent to the dealer after phoning triumph this afternoon and then trying to get back in contact with the dealer with no success..
On the 16/05/03 I purchased a Triumph Daytona 600 from yourselves and 3 weeks ago when it went in for its first service I pointed out that paint had come off the rear hugger and was told a new one would be ordered under warranty.
Then last Saturday whilst cleaning the bike ( approx a week and half after the service ) I noticed a 3 inch crack in the lower fairing that wasn’t there before it was serviced. Now, In my opinion, there are 2 possible explanations.. one of the mechanics broke the fairing while doing the service or its a manufacturing fault as it appears to have cracked on the edge of the heat shield stuck to the inside of the fairing just by the side stand.
I brought the bike to yourselves last Monday and explained the situation to your salesman James, who showed the bike to your mechanics, they denied causing the damage but it does seem suspicious to me that it appeared after it was serviced. Despite them having 2 silver daytona 600's in the showroom they refused to swap the fairing panel and hugger over. Instead they have gaffer taped up the fairing..( looks very attractive on a new bike!) and ive got to wait while they process a warranty claim which means I will have to take ANOTHER afternoon off work and waste ANOTHER 50 miles worth of petrol when the parts come in.
it would have been so much easier for them to have swapped the parts over and i would have left a happy customer. i know you have to keep to the rules but surely seeing as ive bought 2 new triumph from you in the past you should have fallen over yourselves to try and help me?
Anyway I phoned yourselves up again yesterday to chase up what was going on and I was told that the warranty person is on holiday and it wont be dealt with untill he gets back and NOTHING has been done about the fairing.
I personally find this very poor and in my opinion, triumph should have been contacted the same or next day and replacement parts ordered.
Today I phoned up Triumph to find out if there was a problem at there end and iwas told that a hugger was approved and sent on June 20th.. so where is it? Also they confirmed that NOTHING has been reported to them about the fairing, which is just not good enough.
The guy at triumph suggested I contact yourselves again, so I phoned up earlier asking to speak to James and was told he was busy.. fair enough.. and he would call me back ASAP.. That was nearly 3 hours ago and I feel this is no way to treat a valued customer. So I am contacting yourself in the hope that you can sort this out and get the parts ordered so I don’t have to ride around on a bike with a gaffer taped up fairing for much longer.
Just to let you know that this whole episode is being relayed on several motorcycle website discussion forums.. Id like to be able to say you have dealt with this very well.. and id hate to have to contact the likes of MCN or RiDE about this…
Many regards

he has contacted triumph himself and emailed them pictures of the crack in the fairing so hopefully it should get resolved soon.. oh and they do have my hugger.. was in a unopened box.. :sus:
will keep you all informed.. just goes to show if you make loud enough noises to the right people they start to take notice!

Agreed EB but its a pity that you had to take it that far before you got a response.
Hope they now get it sorted quick style.
