Had to pop into Reading today, so went onto M4. As i went past Junction 8/9 a TRX joined. Now i was doing over 70 (naughty) and the traffic was flowing freely. This guy starts riding between us all and cutting from lane 3 to lane 2 between all the cars. Now bearing in mind it was very overcast as well.

Why is it some riders think they are invincible. I admit i filter, but only when it is slow moving traffic. Surely we are vulnerable enough without taking ridiculous chances.

Now if it had just been him thathis riding wasaffecting fair enough, but if he was to cause an accident, irresepctive of what hapened to him, what about the othersa involved and how it would affect them.

And as a poignant reminder of how easy things happen, on the way back, just before Junction 8/9 ther is a car upside down and facing the wrong way on the hard shoulder with police and ambulance iattendance.

So come on, can someone tell me why do it, cos i can't work it out....

People think they look cool. Simple. Either that or they were late or something.

It annoys me even more when people drive at ridiculous speeds through residential areas in their souped up cars. Like the speed limits are only there to spoil people's fun or something? I mean, in a car in residential areas, the person you're most likely to kill is a small child running out, the person in the car is always going to come out unscathed.

Probably because they can. Fun factor and Risk factor. There will always be people like that, no matter what we do.

I guess they just want to do it, because they can. Or because they want to. Something like that. Life's never simple.

People make their own risk assessments and make decisions based on those. An example would be deciding on whether to cross a road as a car approaches. A number of factors come into play.

Plus, your perception of the ride will be different as an observer than from the riders perspective.

In response to your post however, I rarely filter traffic on the motorway. If I do, its usually when other vehicles are travelling significantly slower than the speed limit due to congestion.

Thats my point exactly. It doesn't matter what the riders perception was, to filter between lanes 2 and three, when both lanes are full and travelling in excess of 80 is bloody dangerous, not only for himself but the other road users.

Some people judge things differently. Purely as devils advocate it could be that this guy genuinely thought he was riding safely based on his own slightly out of whack way of assessing risks.

Or, he could just be a total cock with no regard for his own or anyone elses safety .

Perhaps it was Valentino Rossi and he was doing the Times crossword whilst lighting a fag. I agree with you to a certain point Steve but I have to confess to filtering at 80ish a few times. I admit that I have come from the track where I have ridden someone else's bike and on the way home it feels like I could just step of the bike at 80mph cos it felt so slow. I am not saying it is right and Mr Beak would certainly say it wasn't but you feel so hyper aware and tuned to being on the bike that what you described could be considered safe.......ish.

Now this might not be the case with your dude and in fact he could well be a Tw@t but everything is relative don't you think. cool2.gif
