Check the voltage accross your battery, it should be between 12.6 and 13.2 volts, then try the starter and check the voltage while trying to start, it should not drop below 12 volts. Finally try to connect a fully charged battery to yours by jump leads and try to start it. If you have the same problem then something is wrong with the solenoid, if it starts then it is likely that the battery is no good, the voltage readings will confirm this. Also if the bike starts check the voltage with the engine running, it should be no more than 15 volts and no less that 14, anything else suggests that the regulator has blown which is probably what killed the battery in the first place.

Hmm - that sounds familiar

If you say shorting the solenoid turns the bike over, but the starter button won't.
Just one other thing you might want to try, check the ignition feed to the solenoid, check it's actually getting it's control signal.

does it have a sidestand switch?.. my FZR400 didn't but the 600 did, if this switch has gone you get similar problems, try disconnecting it and put a loop of wire across the two terminals in the plug (wiring loom side)
