hi i have a yamaha dt125r and it keeps dieing at about 140miles. (the spark plug stops sparking) as soon as i change it for a new spark plug (BR8ES) it works great for another 140miles then dies again. do you have any ideas on what i should do i really need help with this as it is costing me loads as it is £2.50 per plug and i need to keep constantly buying them. I have been told it cold be the HT lead or the jet. do you no what it could be please. the top speed i can get out of my bike is 55mph and i have been tolt this is realls slow for this kind if bike as mine is a 125cc and it does 55mph and my friend has a 50cc and his does 50.

Does this coincide with your fuel fill ups? What is the colour of the plug when you remove it? Does the bike have a standard exhaust and is it reasonably clean on the inside? And forgetting the top speed have you noticed anything else changing in the way the bike runs? Does it start easier cold than hot? and finally how old is the bike and how many miles has it done?
One thing I've noticed is that you are using the wrong plug, it should be a BR9ES. If the plug has an Ash like deposit on it I would suggest that you check out the Oil pump, many 2 strokes have the oil pump set far too rich for running in, and during service it is often overlooked. Clean or replace your air filter, and don't worry about your mate on his moped that does 50, he's probably riding without insurance and if caught could face a hefty fine.

Another step forward today. Have now built a solid bench in the workshop, have sorted out the rubbish and I still have space for another couple of bikes. So now I just need some more work so I can kit out the bench properly. I hope by the summer to have a Parts washer, Pillar drill, Grinder, Vice and Bearing press then I'll be able to do almost any work on bikes or engines. Had my first shot at grinding out the exhaust ports on the Jawa, fun but very effective, bike runs much sweeter now, and feels like it has much more power.

Workshop now fitted out and fully lit and heated, all ready now to work, hope to be starting on a new job next week where I think everything will get well tested out, at least I've now got loads of space to store bikes and gear and also a workshop to work in, so its all systems go, just need some more work to keep it ticking over.

Hi there, i've got a 99 dt125r which has been stood for about 5 months because i was riding it and it gradually lost its power, and then it didnt start at all. When I tried to kick start it, some smoke came out the exhaust and it made a chhhh noise. lol and today i bought another off-road dt which works fine (apart from the brakes) and i just want 2 no if anybody could tell me what the problem could be. or a list of the parts it could be so that i can swap the parts over and get my on-road dt back on road as i've already spent over 2 grand on it and can't afford to take it to a garage. any help would be greatly appreciated

Try a compression check as a first thing, if the figures are low then it is likely the rings are seized or broken. Try an overnight soak of about 30 ml of Redex into the plug hole with the piston about 2/3 of the way up on the compression stroke. After 18 or so hours, blow out any residue by spinning the starter with the plug out and a rag over the plug hole, and when you try to start it make sure you are in the open air, as there will be a lot of smoke. after you have run the enging for 20 minutes or so, repeat the compression test, if still low then it looks like you could be in for a new set of piston rings or an engine rebore which could be quite expensive, probably best looking for an engine from a crashed bike. Good luck.

ok thanx, i'll try that. but i've already got another working dtr with everything on it that i could need. i just need to know which parts to swap over to get it to start and any help or things i should know about when doing that, because i am fairly new to motorbikes and don't know an awful lot about them.

In that case try changing the exhaust system, two stroke exhausts can very quickly clog up with unburnt oil if the injector pump is not set correctly. Do you have a manual for the bike? If not send me a P.M and I'll help you further off the forum.
warren_boyce
Apr 26 2006, 02:28 PM
yeh i've got a haynes manual, should i change the front and back exhaust? or just the silencer. i've got a dep silencer with the off-road dt, would i need to do anything different with that? i'll have a good look through the manual and try and sort it out. One more thing, i changed the brake pads over and i've spilt some of the brake fluid out. is there any easy way to bleed the brakes? thanx 4 your help
ancientd
Apr 26 2006, 05:55 PM
If you can do the whole system, especially if the engine that the exhaust comes from runs well, it will at the least eliminate one source of problem or cure it. With the DT I doubt that you will need to do anything else to the carburation, just see how it riuns after the change.

Today I finally completed the last step to becoming a Taxi driver by passing my Hackney Drivers Knowlege test. It took me 3 months to get this far as there is a problem getting Criminal Record checks done in Thames Valley Police, so I'm feeling quite chuffed at the moment. It wasn't easy, so in about a week, if you need a Taxi in the Newbury area you should be able to get one by ringing me on any of my Ancient's Biking Services telephone numbers.

Anouncing a couple of new services now available:-
Firstly I now have a MIG welding set so am going to start welding again, was taught as an apprentice but it was a skill I was not able to use much but now I've no excuses.
Secondly, thanks to Snapdradon, I now have a large trailer with which I will be able to recover or transport bikes, I will be modifying it to specifically transport up to 3 bikes at a time, so if you need a bike collecting or moving then the cost will be my hourly rate, plus a charge of 15p per mile for the whole trip.

welding hey?
excelent....because while the engine is out of the bike I need a bolt to be welded.
I asked the guys at BK welding in Newbury and he said he could weld half a stud to replace that stud in the exhaust headers that snaped at the top......
maybe now you can do it?
when you hopefully fix my gearbox?

Well I'm a happy Ancient now, today I signed the lease for a workshop at Lodge Farm, Padworth Lane, Lower Padworth. Post code is RG7 4HY. At the moment it's just a bare barn with a power supply, I've ordered some power bits so that once fitted I can set the place up with sockets and lights Exactly how I want it. I should be able to start working there from mid April and fully open by 1st May. A partition is being put up for me by the owner and although there is a temporary electricity supply already there the Owner will have anything that I supply installed on a permanent supply over the weekend. Next week all my free time will be used up moving things about and fitting some lighting and an alarm, and hopefully the week after I will be moving all my gear in.
I have updated my website to include a map showing how to get there, I have however decided that I will only be there by appointment, until the business takes off and I can do it full time and reduce my taxi work.
There are a few restrictions on the site and the main ones are No washing down of motor vehicles and noise to be kept at a minimum (No excessive reving of bikes) which do not really cause a problem, however I have to dispose of all oils and waste as there are no real facilities on the site at the moment. There is however a water supply in the yard and a toilet block with washing facilities.
If you want to get more details please visit my website at

Thanks for that, one thing I know that I will need is a pipe bender as I intend to run the Electrics through conduit and also I'm going to put in a permanent compressed air circuit around the workshop, so if anyone has one I can borrow for a couple of weeks I would be very grateful.
Wow

Hi Ancient,
Just a thought but you could always run the electrics through plastic conduit, or use metal with elbows bends and T's. Price soon adds up though when you include saddles, boxes etc. etc.
If there is any sign of mouse / rat activity, I notice it's on a farm then metal can save you a bit in replacing cables and also fire risk. The little sods just cant help nibling. Don't forhget to bond and Earth & stick an RCD in and most importantly get a sparky to check it, sign it off, and connect to the mains.
If you do fancy the old and difficult route then "Speedy tool hire" have a few branches round you for hiring the bender or if you hit on a small electrical wholesaler, one of the independants, and you buy a bit of gear they might lend you one, and the tap & die set for threading the ends or maybe do the bends for you.

After two hard days work I've got the electrics sorted, the cost of PVC conduit was too expensive to justify but luckily the barn has large wooden beams, ideal for pinning cable to. Taken 2 trailer loads of gear down there and got a third loaded and ready to go, hope to get some shelving sorted out next week then should be able to start taking work in the week after. Already got the first job booked in for Friday 13th.
