Full Version: Spud the jinx!

Ian
Why, why, why, why did you have to wish me luck with the new bike!  Its all your fault for jinxing me!

Decided that as I was going in to work late this morning and as I'd be there until 8.00pm I would take one last trip on the Viffer.  Big mistake.  On the way home having managed to leave early (6.00pm) some plonker pulls across me and knocks me off in the middle of Edinburgh!  Fairing both sides, headlight and left side indicator all smashed.  Can't see if anything else underneath broken or bent (but the brackets for the upper fairing looked less than straight and the LCD in the clocks was looking worse for wear).  Thankfully and most importantly I only have slight bruising to my left elbow and a bad bruise on my right palm below the thumb as my kit did its job.  New helmet I bought at the show is scratched to buggery as I and it slid along the road (thankfully there was no thud there).  Bike ended up wedged under his front bumper to which the only damage was remnants of red paint from my fairing.

Now I've got the task of ringing the police for a VA number, my insurers to tell them on the last day of the Viffer being insured I've had an accident. My new insurers that I've had an accident.  Two Wheels to get them to fix it pronto and Carricks to let them know that my pristine Viffer is not quite so pristine any more and can they hang on to the FJR a while until 1. I'm fit to ride (I can't grip properly with my right hand because of the bruising, no comments please it hurts!) and 2. the Viffer is fixed!

Please, please, please don't anyone wish me luck again!
BikerGran
Sorry to hear that Ian - glad you're more or less ok tho.

Oh, please can I....  :eyebrow:

Christ, Ian... that's a bastard. Are they going to hold the FJ for you? You must be gutted...
ZOMB!E
thats some very bd luck there mate - hope he gets prosecuted at the very least.  Bruised hand below the thumb?  did you get it xrayed?  Im thinking possible scaphoid (spell?) fracture which is a bugger to heal and very painful.  Glad you're not badlyhurt.

what have the dealer said about the FJR deal now?

all the best mate.

Can imagine the conversation ...

Hi Ian here, Can't have the FJR cos some twonk knocked me off the viffer .....

Yeah, right - Happy April fool's day...

Best of luck, Ian - hope its all sorted fast

What an utter bastard piece of bad luck.
i hope you're claiming for absolutely everything-although you dont need me to tell you that.
Shame about the helmet-but its toast now M8-one impact device n all that.
Heres hoping the dealer is an understanding type, but if it all goes tits up-well at least you can claim comp for the sh!t you (may) have to deal with in not getting the FJR-got to be worth another £1000 for the "distress" & dissapointment surely?
bikerdave
Ian, that's a sh!tter.. It probably couldn't have happened at a worse time. Hope you get fixed up okay.
Ian
The good news is I'm in one piece. The even better news is as I'm fully comp the dealer is going to continue with the deal , fixing up the VFR and I still get the FJR, they even asked if I still wanted to pick it up today but I declined (riding a new 143bhp bike on new tyres with brakes that aren't bedded in, in the rain with a bruised right hand with a lack of ability to grip doesn't appeal for some reason).

On the insurance front both parties are with Norwich Union so there shouldn't be too much argument between insurers though you never know.

As far as I'm concerned I was not at fault and the police officer it was reported to appeared to agree though of course didn't actually say this. I was in my own lane (the left) under the speed limit and he turned across me to enter a junction having been flashed by an Italian bus driver!  I was already slowing down as I'd seen the bus stationary in the right hand lane and a gap had opened up in front of him suggesting someone was being allowed to go.  At this point though I'm already half way along the bus so when he pokes his nose out and then stops across my lane when he saw me there was nowhere for me to go but down.  There was also a witness who was following me who commented if he hadn't seen me braking he would have hit the other party instead.

Still as they say there are worse things happen at sea and the worst that can happen is I have to pay my excess and the next renewal is a little more expensive.

On the hand front I did go to A&E and had it examined, there was no suggestion that anything is broken as the pain is only there when the muscle that moves the thumb is pressed or I try to grip anything so no X-ray but I'm comfortable that this is correct.  A few other bits have stiffened up over night (left hip and knee) but no obvious bruising or swelling showing so not too worried about these either.

Have a word with TC about the liabillity issue although from what you say it seems fair enough that it was the other drivers fault.  TC may also be able to help with recovering costs if you havent already set the legal dogs on the other bloke.

Like you say probably just bruised that big muscle that pulls the thumb about.  You'll probably be finding bruises for the next few days!

Confucius say:

better to bin the viffer on its last day, than the FJR on its first  :D  :D

If you want ... I'll pick the FJR up for you - just gimme a lift to the shop, and I'll see ya when its run in!!!  :p  :p

Bastard1  Sorry those who know me know i never swear( well okay I swear like f**k but it's still deserved by this BASTARD).
So you get flashed to go it's still your responsibillity to make sure it's safe to do so. Pillock and the effing idiot bus driver.  If Ive read it right he flashed the bloke to cross two lanes with the bus on the right?  Pillock effing idiot bus driving fat slob pillock.  Could second guess all day about what action you could have taken but it means nothing cos the accident happened and that's that.  We had a thing a while ago about the dangers of flashing people to go.  Ask TC what he thinks about this matter and he will rant like you wouldnt believe but this is something where he is completely right! ( he's probably always right but I just cant help arguing!)
sh!t mate, just glad you only got bruised.  Have i mentioned my advice about carrying a disposable camera?  Good tip that  coz the old bill will take some snaps of the scene for you even if you cant - helps no end to have 'at the time snaps' when you get to court six months later.

Dont let it put you off mate - lifes tooo short to go through without a bike!

all the best Zombie!
ZOMB!E
Just to reiterate that my criticisms are of the driver that crossed your path and the bus driver for letting him  - not you.
Ian
Don't worry Wayne I didn't take your comments any other way.  And it certainly hasn't put me off.  I'll be back on a bike as soon as I stop aching.
ZOMB!E
Thanks mate - always a worry going into one on line as the inflection and general tone not to mention the facial getsures are always lost.

FJR1300 - you lucky fu...........

Ian,

I can only say sorry so many times. Rest assured I will not wish anyone well again with a new bike until it is safely tucked away in their garage.

Looking at the pics, is the frame scratched or marked up in any way? If so, it might well be bye-bye bike. Patrick's SV succumbed to this did it not?

Break a leg,

Spud.
Ian
Spud mate, don't take it too seriously I'm only joshing with you.  Sorry if it came across any other way.

As for the frame it looks like its escaped other than the transfer of some paint from the fairing.  Wouldn't mind if it was written off though as I'd be better off because I took that total loss insurance.  If it's a total loss would mean the Viffer would be replaced with a new one which would mean bigger trade in value!  All a little complicated I know but I don't think I could be quite that 'lucky', do you?

Ach away, you know me better than that.

As for the total loss cover, it might be better if you can just get the cash for the VFR if it is deemed not economically viable to repair (which would be a shame in a lot of ways) ... you might even get a better deal.

As for luck - we won't go there. I remember the NW200 trip last year too well. At least this year we've got proper accomodation ... I hope.

- Spud.
Ian
Had a phone call today from Norwich Union.  The other party is admitting full liability.  So no loss of no claims or excess for me then.  Just got to speak to the solicitors about my injuries and damaged helmet now.  As there is no permanent damage to me I'm not expecting much other than reimbursement of cost of helmet (£160).
bikerdave
Hopefully you can get this fixed pretty and get one with enjoying the new bike.  :buttrock: When they see that you're not claiming for huge amounts of money, we can only hope that the insurers pay up quickly.
