after my incident with dropping the tt over ive been thinking about getting some of those plastic mushroom things that go on the side of the fairings... Now the ones that bolt onto the frame i think are a bad idea cos they could end up punching a hole in the frame. So im trying to get some that go onto the fairing mounts or ive seen ones that are on a bar that just goes through from one side to the other..

so my question is , do the rest of you think there worth fitting or will they end up causing more damage to a bike if it gets dropped over?

They are a good idea, that's why racers use them so the bike slides on them instead of more expensive bits when they come off.  Frame mounted ones are designed to give slightly when contact is made so they take the damage instead of the frame.  Also try and find some that don't require the cutting of the plastics to fit which some makes do require for certain models.

Dont drop your bike!
Put an old mattress on the patio.

I dont like these things an am not convinced that most of them on the market do much good. I wouldn't bother mate but it's your bike.

Crash bungs are what you want, as opposed to magic mushrooms, both will lessen the damage if you drop it.The mushrooms wont help much over 10/15 mph-the crash bungs will fare better as they usually fix with brackets to the frame/engine mounts-but you may find it hard to find any to fit the TT.
I've got magic mushrooms on the ZZR-mainly in the case of  dropping it-& crash bungs wont fit the ZZR.

Moko Mototechnik make ones for the TT600 £58.99 from MPS.

Magic Mushrooms??

We liked them back in the 1960s,many a biker has fallen foul to the ways of the little blob.

I think they were out way back in the 60s albeit in a different shape and meterial, nylon was used then and a big difference it made to when your bike slid away from you, the damage was alot lighter and the handle bars diddn't get as mangled up.
They are a good idea even if they don't look great on some bikes..

They look pants on any bike. Save your cash and invest in shares in tomohawk missile production.

I'm thinking of getting something similar for the ST.
I found what appear to be a good set at:

http://www.skykingproducts.com

I've asked what P&P to the UK would cost as they are a lot cheaper to buy direct than from the sole authorized dealer in the UK.
They're all in Japan for the GP, but will be back as of the 9th. The guy's wife has emailed me to let me know that they'll be in touch as soon as they return. (Good enough service for me ....)

I'll let you know what the cost is likely to be for shipping if you'd be interested, or drop me a direct email if you fancy a set.

They look pants on any bike.  there, Ive said it twice.  I had a ZZR1100 - if that thing hit the deck in any way it would cost a bob or two but i would rather risk that than deface my baby with big plastic blobs.  I saw ( and so did EB) a nearly new gix six that some knob ditched when roundabout surfing at twenty five mph or so - he had crash bungs/mushrooms.fairing protectors and they did jack sheet to protect anything.

Sorry but I think they are a con and a load of sh!te. Owning a bike is a risk - owning an expensive bike is a risk that we choose to bear.  Fully comp insurance and some care is better that big ugly blobs everywhere.  Okay so the excess prolly comes to the cost of the replacement fairing but with peeps like DP and Imageica and TC maybe you should just bear it and not spoil a nice looking bike with BIG UGLY LUMPS OF NASTY BIG UGLY NYLONNNY LOOKING PLASTIC sh!tE .

maybe.......... veryangry.gif  :p

Can't disagree with Zombie regards the aesthetics but I think the degree of protection offered by the different brands is ... well ... variable to put it mildly.

The one thing that might sway it for me is the story on the SkyKing website where the guy threw his bike along the road, but the "frame sliders" meant his radiator and oil cooler survived, so he was able to ride the last 400 miles home.

The bike was totalled by the insurance company, and the panels were in a mess, but scraped to bu**ery rather than smashed to bits.

Ye pays yer money (if you like) ....

I gotta agree that the best defense is: Don't throw it up the road .....
